Mirelo bets AI video's missing sound is a moat; $41M seed from Index and a16z
Berlin's Mirelo SFX adds synced sound to AI videos; two-year-old startup raised a $41M seed led by Index Ventures and a16z in Dec 2025.
Mirelo
What the business is
Berlin startup building AI models that watch a video and generate synced sound effects; it sells model access via fal.ai and Replicate APIs plus a Mirelo Studio creator workspace on a freemium plan.
Starting capital:Undisclosed pre-seed led by Atlantic (Berlin); $41M seed led by Index Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz with Atlantic and TriplePoint Capital participating, bringing total raised to $44M (Dec 2025)
How it started
Founded in 2023 by CJ Simon-Gabriel and Florian Wenzel, AI researchers and musicians who met at Amazon's AI labs, frustrated that their field paid so little attention to sound. They positioned sound as 50% of the movie-going experience, citing George Lucas, and built Mirelo SFX in stealth while resource-constrained.
What happened
Mirelo SFX launched on fal.ai in August 2025 and on Replicate in September 2025, becoming the first sound-effects model designed specifically for AI-generated video. In December 2025 the two-year-old startup announced a $41M seed led by Index Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz, with Atlantic participating, taking total funding to $44M; the 10-person team planned to double or triple headcount through 2026, and angels include Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch, Hugging Face chief science officer Thomas Wolf and fal.ai co-founder Burkay Gur.
How it ended up
Still running and scaling: SFX 1.6 shipped in May 2026 with iterative audio inpainting, and AI music generation is on the roadmap; no exit.
Background
Mirelo is a Berlin startup founded in 2023 by CJ Simon-Gabriel and Florian Wenzel, AI researchers and musicians who met at Amazon's AI labs. Its bet: AI video generation exploded, but nearly every tool shipped mute — and sound, as Simon-Gabriel put it, is at least 50% of the viewing experience. The company built Mirelo SFX, a model that treats the video itself as the prompt and generates perfectly synced sound effects with no text input.
The wedge was the synthetic-video niche. Mirelo optimized for AI-generated footage, where general sound models leak unwanted music or speech, and shipped on fal.ai in August 2025 and Replicate in September 2025. In blind listening tests the startup says users preferred its output 67.4% of the time (77% counting ties) against PixVerse, MMAudio V2 and ThinkSound.
In December 2025 TechCrunch exclusively reported a $41M seed round led by Index Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz, with Berlin's Atlantic (pre-seed lead) and TriplePoint Capital participating, bringing total funding to $44M. The 10-person team planned to double or triple headcount, and angels include Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch and Hugging Face CSO Thomas Wolf.
Mirelo competes with Sony, Tencent, Kling AI and ElevenLabs, and with DeepMind's Veo 3.1 now generating soundtracks in Gemini. Its answer: stay narrower and deeper — SFX 1.6 (May 2026) added iterative audio inpainting, and AI music generation is on the roadmap, while a freemium Mirelo Studio targets amateurs and prosumers at €20/month.
What has to be true
- Sound was systematically neglected: most AI video tools generate visuals only, leaving a category nobody owned.
- A focused video-to-SFX model could beat generalists on synthetic content, where competitors' models produce artifacts like leaked music or speech.
- The field has less research than other generative AI areas, making a real moat easier to build and capitalize on.
- Distribution came fast through model marketplaces — fal.ai and Replicate — turning API usage into the near-term revenue engine without a big sales team.
What can be applied
Pick the neglected half of a hot category: while everyone raced to generate AI visuals, Mirelo made the video the prompt and owned 'unmuting' AI video, where a moat was still buildable.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-02, Mirelo is live and hiring: SFX 1.6 shipped in May 2026, adding audio inpainting and audio-consistent video extension through partners like Tellers, and the company continues to publish models on fal.ai and Replicate while building out Mirelo Studio for creators. It has not disclosed valuation; the $44M total raised funds R&D, product and go-to-market against bigger competitors like Sony, Tencent, Kling AI, ElevenLabs and DeepMind's Veo 3.1.
