MixRank (YC S11) raises $1.5M to sell small advertisers a spy tool for AdSense
Mark Cuban and 500 Startups backed MixRank's December 2011 bet that advertisers would buy intelligence on rivals' AdSense ads rather than split-test their own.
MixRank
What the business is
MixRank was a display-advertising competitive-intelligence service: it crawled pages running Google AdSense, indexed millions of ads daily, and showed which ad copy and traffic sources were working in any market.
How it started
MixRank came out of Y Combinator's Summer 2011 batch; co-founder Ilya Lichtenstein came from affiliate marketing, and co-founder Scott Milliken built most of the architecture. It launched on 2011-06-30 as a free service that indexed pages running Google AdSense and showed an advertiser which ad copy, calls to action, and traffic sources were working for competitors.
What happened
On 2011-12-13 TechCrunch reported a $1.5M round from 500 Startups, Mark Cuban, IAB founder Rich LeFurgy, MediaTrust chairman Peter Bordes, Leadclick founder Robert Afshar, Adify co-founder Larry Braitman, Chart.io co-founder David Beyer, Tom McInerney, Matt Ocko and Zachary Bogue, raised via AngelList. By then more than 4,000 advertisers were building display campaigns on MixRank, and the money was earmarked for a bigger engineering team and deeper analytics.
No ending yet — it is still running.
Background
MixRank was a display-advertising competitive-intelligence startup from Y Combinator's Summer 2011 batch, co-founded by Ilya Lichtenstein, who came from affiliate marketing, and Scott Milliken, who built most of the architecture. It launched on 2011-06-30 as a free service that crawled pages running Google AdSense and estimated which ad copy and traffic sources actually worked; TechCrunch called it a spy tool for AdSense and reported 93,000 sites indexed at launch.
The pitch was that small brands could not afford the teams of copywriters, researchers and testers big advertisers used, so MixRank handed them the evidence instead: which wording a competitor was testing, which calls to action won, and which sites sent the traffic. Google sorts ads by effectiveness, so MixRank read that ordering to estimate performance, and the founders' roadmap pointed at modeling the whole display market.
On 2011-12-13 TechCrunch reported a $1.5M round from 500 Startups, Mark Cuban, IAB founder Rich LeFurgy, MediaTrust chairman Peter Bordes, Leadclick founder Robert Afshar, Adify co-founder Larry Braitman, Chart.io co-founder David Beyer, Tom McInerney, Matt Ocko and Zachary Bogue, raised via AngelList. By then more than 4,000 advertisers were building display campaigns on the platform, and the money was earmarked for the engineering team and deeper analytics.
What has to be true
- Display ads were growing twice as fast as search in 2010, and tiny wording tweaks could change clickthrough tenfold, so ad-performance data had clear, quantified value.
- Small advertisers lacked the testing and creative operations of Groupon-scale rivals; seeing competitors' proven copy and traffic sources leveled a real asymmetry.
- The round mixed money (500 Startups, Mark Cuban) with ad-industry insiders (LeFurgy, Bordes, Braitman), buying both capital and distribution credibility in adtech.
- Traction ran ahead of the raise: 93,000 sites indexed at the June launch, then 4,000+ advertisers building campaigns by December 2011.
What can be applied
Sell the answer to an expensive question: MixRank monetized the split tests competitors had already run, handing small advertisers evidence instead of guesswork.
Aftermath
As of 2011-12-13 MixRank had just announced the $1.5M seed, more than 4,000 advertisers were building campaigns on the platform, and the founders planned to grow the engineering team and build more sophisticated analytics. The batch's sources end on that date; what happened in later years is not documented here.
