Olostep bets AI agents need a browser-grade layer for the web

Brothers Hamza and Arslan Ali sell a web-data API so AI agents can search, scrape and structure the web; PH 2026-08-30 ranked it #3 with 225 upvotes.

What the business is

Olostep is a San Francisco-based web data API for AI. Its search, scrape, crawl, map, batch, monitor, answers and agent endpoints turn live web pages into LLM-ready Markdown, HTML, screenshots or structured JSON, with Python and Node SDKs, MCP access, pre-built parsers and credit-based pricing.

How it started

Hamza Ali, an Italian former medical student, started Olostep with his brother Arslan Ali, a Stanford computer science student and former Sameday (YC W23) engineer, from an idea born in Italy. After a chance meeting with an investor in San Francisco, the pair took funding, moved to the US, ran a private beta with select clients, and launched publicly in September 2025 — positioning Olostep as the 'programmatic web layer for AI', for agents what the browser is for humans.

What happened

The founders argue the agentic shift breaks infrastructure built for a human in the loop: search returns links that a person opens, while an agent needs the work done — hundreds of sources read, fields extracted, conflicts resolved and structured output delivered. Olostep built the data layer first: search, scrape, crawl, map, batch processing of up to 10,000 URLs, scheduled monitors and a natural-language answers API, with parsers such as @olostep/google-search and Python and Node SDKs. Go-to-market was word of mouth through the Y Combinator community, and customers named publicly range from seed-stage startups to Series E companies including Openmart, Gumloop, Podqi and Profound. Pricing runs from a 500-request free trial to $9, $99 and $399 monthly tiers plus credit packs.

No ending yet — it is still running.

Background

Olostep is a San Francisco-based web data API for AI, founded by brothers Hamza Ali — an Italian former medical student who previously co-founded the AI e-commerce tool Zecento — and Arslan Ali, a Stanford computer science student and former YC-backed startup engineer. The pair started from an idea in Italy, took funding after a chance meeting with an investor in San Francisco, ran a private beta, and launched publicly in September 2025 as the 'programmatic web layer for AI'.

The founding thesis is that the agentic shift breaks infrastructure built for a human in the loop. Search returns links that a person opens and reads; an agent instead needs the work done — hundreds of sources searched, pages read, fields extracted, conflicts resolved and structured output delivered. Olostep set out to rebuild that data layer first, so AI teams can get live, structured web data through one API.

The product covers search, scrape, crawl, map, batch processing of up to 10,000 URLs, scheduled monitors and a natural-language answers API, with parsers such as @olostep/google-search, Python and Node SDKs, and MCP access for agents. Pricing runs from a 500-request free trial to $9, $99 and $399 monthly tiers plus credit packs, and the site markets itself as the most cost-effective web data API on the market.

Distribution came through word of mouth inside the Y Combinator community, with publicly named customers including Openmart, Gumloop, Podqi and Profound. Its 2026-08-30 Product Hunt day ranked #3 with 225 upvotes in AIToolly's snapshot. The company says it is VC-backed but has not disclosed the size of its round or revenue.

What has to be true

  • The thesis is legible: agents cannot use links the way humans do, so the web needs a data layer built for machines.
  • Olostep covers the full job — search, scrape, crawl, monitor, batch — behind one API and one pricing page instead of a scraped-together stack.
  • The founders' own story (med student, Italy, chance investor meeting) plus YC-community word of mouth gave early distribution without paid marketing.
  • Cost positioning — a free tier and sub-$0.40 per 1,000 requests per the site — targets budget-sensitive AI startup buyers.
  • Risk: web-data APIs are a crowded, reliability-sensitive market, and any site's bot defenses can break the core promise.

What can be applied

When a new platform class arrives, the wedge is one boring, reliable API every builder needs — then word of mouth inside a single community does the distribution.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-05 Olostep is live and says it is backed by venture firms, with monthly tiers from a free trial to $399, credit packs, and homepage claims of more than one billion average API calls handled, 99.9% uptime and over 50 billion accessible pages. Its 2026-08-30 Product Hunt day ranked #3 in AIToolly's snapshot. The company has not disclosed revenue or the size of its funding round; the founders say the long-term goal is to move beyond data extraction toward a browser for AI agents that automates human web tasks.
