Pulse was an automated Slack status updater that set your availability from calendar and Zoom signals; Mozilla is the Firefox maker on an ML hiring push.

Terms undisclosed; Pulse had raised around $4.7 million in pre-seed funding, and Mozilla's deal was widely read as a bargain acqui-hire.

Founded in Menlo Park in 2019 as virtual-office platform Loop Team, the company pivoted and rebranded as Pulse in November 2021, and spent 2022 acquiring rivals Holopod, Commons and Lounge to own automated status updating.

Plans to raise a seed round in early 2023 collapsed with the market; in late October 2022 Pulse told customers it was shutting down due to market conditions while confirming a buyer it wouldn't name. Slack — the obvious suitor given Singh's earlier sale of Tempo AI to Salesforce — didn't bite. Instead Mozilla, whose only prior acquisition was Pocket in 2017, took the six-person team, deploying them across machine learning projects with an early focus on personalising Pocket's recommendations.

The acquisition closed in December 2022, bringing Pulse's three founders and six-person team into Mozilla's ML efforts; Pulse itself was not resurrected.

Mozilla needed ML talent fast and bought a team that had already shipped ML features in production.

The founders' pedigree — Singh built Tempo AI inside SRI International, the Stanford lab behind Siri — de-risked the hire.

For Pulse, a fundable product had become unfixable: with no Series A possible, the team's value was in acqui-hire.

Mozilla signalled a new openness to M&A, following the deal with a third acquisition, metaverse startup Active Replica, the same week.

Acqui-hires price the team, not the product: a startup that can't raise can still be the cheapest ML department a slow mover ever buys.

As of the 1 December 2022 announcement, the Pulse team was deploying across Mozilla's ML projects, with personalisation in Pocket the early focus; Pulse's product was not revived.
