What the business is
A Berlin-headquartered mobile-only bank, once valued above US$9 billion, backed by Peter Thiel and Tencent.
The bet
That the mobile-only bank could win a slice of the world's most competitive digital-banking market, Brazil, before its European core was even profitable.
Starting capital
Backed by Tencent and Peter Thiel; previously valued at more than US$9 billion.
How it started
N26 launched its Brazilian test phase in 2021, chasing a market that had just proved newcomers could scale: Revolut arrived in 2022 and Nubank was nearly doubling revenue year on year.
What happened
The pilot stayed small — selected customers only — while the bank's losses grew 14% to €172.4 million in 2021 and its centre of gravity stayed in Europe. In early November 2023 N26 announced a new supervisory board 'as preparation for the next stages of development', with executives saying they planned to reach profitability within two years.
How it ended up
On November 7, 2023 N26 announced it would close the Brazilian pilot and exit the market; selected customers' accounts were to be closed within two months, and the ~80 São Paulo staff could apply for roles in European offices.
What has to be true
Brazil is the hardest digital-banking market in the world to enter — Nubank, Revolut and the incumbents had already crowded it — and N26's pilot never moved past selected customers.
Losses of €172.4M in 2021 and a two-year profitability pledge left no room for funding a distant market that had not left test phase.
The 2021 US retreat had already established the pattern: when capital gets tight, N26 consolidates on Europe — Brazil was the second instalment of the same decision.
What can be applied
Expansion funded by the home market's patience has a cut-off date: when losses peak, the periphery goes first — twice in a row means the map, not the market, was wrong.
Aftermath
As of the announcement, selected Brazilian customers had two months before account closures and São Paulo staff could redeploy to Europe. The company pointed to its European focus and profitability target within two years; the material reports no further Brazil plans.
