Napkin AI: text-to-visuals bet goes from Jike virality to 5M users

Ex-Osmo founders bet generation-first text-to-visuals would beat Canva/Adobe; $10M seed from Accel & CRV, 2M beta users in six months.

Napkin AI (napkin.ai Inc.)

The betThat 'generation-first' text-to-visuals — not AI bolted onto Canva/Adobe editors — would win business storytelling, because most people can write but can't design.Scaling

What the business is

Napkin AI is a web tool that turns pasted or generated text into editable visuals — flowcharts, timelines, Venn diagrams, infographics — for presentations, documents and social content.

Starting capital$10M seed from Accel and CRV (August 2024).

How it started

Pramod Sharma (ex-Google, founder of kids-games company Osmo, sold to Byju's for $120M) and Osmo founding-team member Jerome Scholler started Napkin around 2021 after years of drowning in decks and documents. They iterated through a mouse-sketching tool and a visual-framework library before LLMs made the final product possible: text in, editable visuals out. The platform came out of stealth on August 7, 2024 with $10M from Accel and CRV.

What happened

Growth came from word-of-mouth and creators rather than paid ads: discussion on Jike, TikTok and YouTube walkthroughs, and 94% branded-keyword search traffic. By December 2024 coverage reported about 4.2M visits in four months; by February 2025 Napkin had 2M beta users (doubling in six weeks), a 12-person remote team, and a four-agent architecture (text, layout, icon, style) that generated visuals in five seconds. Monetization came later, with paid tiers replacing the free beta.

How it ended up

Still running: by mid-2025 Napkin passed 5M registered users, and as of 2026 it sells Free/Plus/Pro/Enterprise subscription tiers; no Series A announced as of 2026-09-02.

Background

Napkin AI is a web-based tool that turns text into editable visuals — flowcharts, timelines, Venn diagrams and infographics — for presentations, documents and social content. It came out of stealth on August 7, 2024 with $10 million from Accel and CRV, founded by Pramod Sharma (ex-Google; founder of Osmo, sold to Byju's for $120M) and Jerome Scholler, an Osmo founding-team member.

The bet was 'generation-first': instead of bolting AI onto Canva- or Adobe-style editors, Napkin starts in a text editor and generates visuals in seconds, then lets users edit. The launch spread through word-of-mouth and creators rather than paid ads — discussion on Jike, plus TikTok and YouTube walkthroughs. 白鲸出海 reported about 4.2M visits in the first four months, with 56.2% direct traffic and 94% branded search terms; VentureBeat reported 2M beta users by February 2025, doubled in six weeks.

By mid-2025 Napkin passed 5M registered users and moved from a free beta to subscription tiers (Free, Plus, Pro, Enterprise). As of 2026-09-02 it is still running on its seed round with no Series A announced, selling visual AI to marketers, consultants, engineers and comms teams.

What has to be true

  • Starts where users already are — writing text — instead of forcing them into a design tool, lowering the skill barrier to visual communication.
  • Generation-first with editable output beats one-shot image generators: users can fix colors, fonts and layouts without re-rolling the AI.
  • Distribution came free from Jike, TikTok and YouTube creators who found 'one-click diagrams' a demo-able story, plus 94% branded search traffic.
  • A $120M Osmo exit gave Accel and CRV confidence, and a small remote team kept costs low through hypergrowth.

What can be applied

Generation-first products can beat incumbents that bolt AI onto existing editors: meet users in a workflow they already have, make output editable, and let word-of-mouth and creators do distribution.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-02, Napkin AI is live and monetizing. After passing 5 million registered users by mid-2025, the company moved from a free beta to published tiers — Free (500 credits/week), Plus ($9–12/user/month), Pro ($22–30/user/month) and Enterprise custom pricing — per 2026 pricing coverage. It remains seed-funded ($10M from Accel and CRV, August 2024) with no Series A announced; the product still centers on text-to-visuals for marketers, consultants and comms teams, and the company continues to operate with a small remote team.
