How it started

Founded in 2021 by CEO Nikita Shamgunov (ex-SingleStore co-founder and CEO), Heikki Linnakangas (a Postgres committer for two decades) and Stas Kelvich, Neon set out to rebuild database foundations designed for the 90s. Their bet: Postgres would become the default database, and the future was serverless — instant provisioning, automated scaling and Git-like branching.

What happened

Neon raised $129.6M from Microsoft's M12, General Catalyst, Menlo Ventures and Notable Capital. As AI agents took off, they became Neon's best customers: 30% of databases were created by agents when Neon hit GA, passing 80% by early 2025. Databricks said Neon's speed, branching and low-cost scale made it the database for agent-driven applications, and on May 14, 2025 announced it would acquire Neon for about $1 billion.

Background

Neon is an open-source serverless Postgres platform founded in 2021 by CEO Nikita Shamgunov (ex-SingleStore), Heikki Linnakangas (a Postgres committer for two decades) and Stas Kelvich. It separates storage from compute, substitutes Postgres' storage layer with a distributed engine, and offers instant branching, autoscaling and scale-to-zero — an open alternative to AWS Aurora Postgres.

The bet was that databases were still designed for the 90s and that the future belonged to serverless Postgres: instances created in seconds, scaled automatically, and branched 'like Git for code' so every test and preview could get an isolated copy. Neon raised $129.6M from Microsoft's M12, General Catalyst, Menlo Ventures and Notable Capital, and its GitHub repository passed 22.5k stars.

The AI-agent era made the bet look prescient: 30% of databases on Neon were created by agents when it hit GA, and that passed 80% by early 2025. On May 14, 2025 Databricks announced it would acquire Neon for about $1 billion, saying serverless Postgres was what AI agents needed. In August 2026 the Electric team — creators of PGlite and a real-time sync engine that grew from 1M to 13M weekly downloads — joined the Neon team inside Databricks, with plans to keep Postgres running in browsers, sandboxes and agent runtimes.
