Nomba (formerly Kudi)

The betThat POS terminals in thousands of small agents' hands could move Nigeria's cash economy into digital payments, then grow into infrastructure for businesses of all sizes.Scaling

What the business is

Nomba is a Nigerian payment service provider that started as a chatbot called Kudi and now offers POS terminals, accounts, payment APIs and business tools for merchants.

How it started

Nomba was founded in 2016 by Adeyinka Adewale and Pelumi Aboluwarin as Kudi, a YC-backed chatbot that answered financial requests inside social apps. It struggled to scale in a country where 90% of informal-economy transactions are cash-based and over 60 million Nigerian adults are unbanked, so two years after launch the founders pivoted to agency banking.

What happened

The agency model took off: a $5M Series A in 2019 from Partech and Khosla Ventures, an acquisition of agent network CrowdForce, and a May 2022 rebrand from Kudi to Nomba as it became an omnichannel platform. In May 2023 Nomba raised a $30M pre-Series B led by Base10 Partners, with Partech, Khosla, Helios Digital Ventures and Shopify participating, valuing it above $150M per YC data. At the time it reported 300k+ businesses, $1B in monthly transactions and revenue growing 150% year over year since 2020.

How it ended up

Still scaling: in FY2025, its first full year as an API-led payments business, Nomba processed N122B (~$77M) across 1.85M transactions, virtual accounts made up 75% of API volume, and it added Apple Pay integration while pushing into cross-border payments.

Background

Nomba, founded in 2016 by Adeyinka Adewale and Pelumi Aboluwarin, began life as Kudi, a YC-backed chatbot that handled financial requests inside social apps. It failed to scale because Nigeria's economy still runs on cash — 90% of informal-economy transactions are cash-based and over 60 million adults are unbanked — so two years after launch the founders pivoted.

The pivot was to agency banking: Nomba put POS terminals in the hands of thousands of small business owners who offered cash withdrawal, transfers and bill payments to the unbanked. A $5M Series A from Partech and Khosla Ventures followed in 2019, an acquisition of agent network CrowdForce deepened its reach, and in May 2022 Kudi rebranded as Nomba to reflect its move from a single POS product to an omnichannel payments platform.

In May 2023 Nomba raised a $30M pre-Series B led by San Francisco's Base10 Partners, with Partech, Khosla Ventures, Helios Digital Ventures and Shopify participating, valuing the company above $150M per YC data. At the time it reported more than 300,000 businesses using at least one product, $1B in monthly transactions, and revenue growing 150% year over year since 2020.

The company kept evolving: in FY2025, its first full year as an API-led payments business, it processed N122B (~$77M) across 1.85M transactions, with virtual accounts accounting for 75% of API volume, a 99.78% transaction success rate, and an Apple Pay integration announced late in the year.

What has to be true

  • The founders read the market honestly: a chatbot could not beat a cash-based economy, so they pivoted to agent POS banking instead of forcing the original product.
  • Agency banking made 60M+ unbanked Nigerians reachable through thousands of small-business agents who already handled cash.
  • The CrowdForce acquisition and 2022 rebrand repositioned the company from a single POS tool to an omnichannel platform.
  • Product tiers by turnover — agents, SMEs and enterprises — let Nomba climb the market instead of being stuck at one end.
  • After 2023 it moved to API-first payments with virtual accounts, staying relevant as Nigerian commerce digitized.

What can be applied

Abandon the product the market rejects, not the mission: Kudi's chatbot flopped, its pivot to agent POS banking reached 300k businesses — the wedge changed, the payments goal didn't.

Aftermath

As of September 2026 Nomba is scaling as an API-led payments business: FY2025 saw N122B processed across 1.85M transactions with virtual accounts at 75% of API volume and a 99.78% success rate, and the company is pushing into cross-border payments and global card compatibility.
