What the business is
Novu is a Tel Aviv developer-infrastructure startup whose open-source project gives teams one API for multi-channel product notifications; Novu Connect, launched in June 2026, extends that into two-way agent-to-human messaging across chat channels and email.
The bet
AI agents fail at reaching humans in Slack, Teams, WhatsApp, Telegram and email; Novu bets its open-source notification plumbing can own that communication layer.
Starting capital
US$6.6M seed announced in May 2022 from Crane Venture Partners, Eniac Ventures, MXV Capital, Entrée Capital and angel Ariel Maislos.
How it started
Tomer Barnea and Dima Grossman had rebuilt in-house notification plumbing repeatedly in earlier products, so in 2021 they started Novu as an open-source project in Tel Aviv. The repo grew from about 200 to 3,500 stars within months, reached 10.4k stars with 2,363% annualized growth by Q3 2022, and the same year the company announced a US$6.6M seed.
What happened
By mid-2026 the open-source repo sat near 40k GitHub stars, and the team watched AI agents hit the same integration wall they had solved for notifications. On 2026-06-15 Novu launched Novu Connect as agent communication infrastructure: developers bring their own agent logic while Novu handles delivery, identity resolution, threading, routing and channel formatting across Slack, Teams, WhatsApp, Telegram and email. The launch took #1 Product of the Day with 404 upvotes and 64 comments, with commenters pressing on identity mapping across channels and audit trails.
What has to be true
The problem was already proven: Novu spent years watching teams hand-build multi-channel delivery, and agents simply moved that pain from product notifications to conversational messaging.
Distribution transferred directly: roughly 40k developers already used Novu for notifications, so Connect did not need a new audience, only a new job title for the same plumbing.
Chat is where agents meet users: anchoring on Slack, Teams, WhatsApp and Telegram avoided forcing anyone into a new workspace, the same way notification APIs won by meeting products where they lived.
The launch moment worked: a #1 Product of the Day with 404 upvotes validated developer pull before any enterprise sales cycle, and the comments showed the buyer was already technical.
What can be applied
Adjacent markets inherit distribution: agents recreated notifications' reach-the-user problem, and Novu's open-source developer base let Connect launch to an audience that trusted its plumbing.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-06 Novu is running the agent bet in public: its GitHub project now describes itself as open-source communication infrastructure for agents and products, careers pages advertise agent-communication-infrastructure roles, and the team says it is building the layer in the open the way it built notifications. What remains unproven is the business model: whether developers pay for hosted agent messaging the way they pay for notification delivery, and whether rivals fold agent communication into agent frameworks or observability suites instead.
