What the business is
OKX is a global crypto exchange; OKX Money is its standalone consumer app for converting local currencies into dollar-backed stablecoins.
The bet
That people in Latin America, Africa, South Asia and the Middle East will hold dollar stablecoins to protect savings and pay globally — not just an exchange.
How it started
OKX argues that currency swings, limited banking access and FX fees make it hard to protect savings and spend globally in emerging markets. Global managing partner Haider Rafique frames the gap as settlement — small businesses waiting days for banks, travelers whose credit limits freeze on hotel deposits — and recalls the Western Union fees his parents paid sending money from Pakistan.
What happened
OKX Money went live at the OKX Now product event in Singapore. It landed alongside other expansion moves: the OKX-ICE joint venture, co-chaired by former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, filed with the SEC for 24/7 trading of more than 60 tokenized US stocks, and OKX introduced OKX Shield, promising up to $100,000 reimbursement for regular users and $500,000 for top VIPs after third-party takeovers — in a year when crypto platforms have lost an estimated $2.7 billion to hacks, per CertiK.
What has to be true
Roughly 97% of global stablecoin value is dollar-pegged; OKX is selling dollar access to users whose local currencies cannot hold value.
Altcoin liquidity 'is just not there' even as Bitcoin rebounds, per Rafique — the exchange needs a second engine beyond trading.
Yield, FX-free cards and instant settlement attack the remittance and card fees Rafique says he grew up watching his family pay.
ICE's investment at a $25B valuation gave OKX both the balance sheet and the institutional legitimacy to push into consumer fintech.
What can be applied
A $25B exchange defending a thinning trading pool goes where the dollar already is: with 97% of stablecoin value USD-pegged, the product to sell is the dollar itself.
Aftermath
As of 2026-10-05 OKX Money is live with three dollar stablecoins, up to 10% yield on eligible USDG balances and no-FX-markup cards, aimed at Latin America, Africa, South Asia and the Middle East. The same week, the OKX-ICE joint venture filed with the SEC for round-the-clock trading of 60+ tokenized US stocks.
