OpenClaw (Clawdbot/Moltbot): one dev's 10-day AI agent hits 105k GitHub stars

OpenClaw (born as Clawdbot) is an open-source personal AI agent that runs on a user's own Mac or server and is commanded through WhatsApp, Slack, Telegram or iMessage, controlling local files, terminals and browsers.

That one developer plus frontier coding models could build a personal agent operating a computer from chat apps, and users would grant it full access for automation.

None — a solo, unpaid side project; Steinberger said it had not earned back a Mac mini's cost.

Peter Steinberger, Austrian founder of iOS PDF library PSPDFKit, sold his software company, burned out, and drifted for years until Claude Code's beta rekindled his interest. He taught himself web development and, in about ten days at home, built Clawdbot — a personal agent living on a local Mac or server, operated through the chat apps people already use.

Within days the project went viral: stars climbed from roughly 5,000 to 70,000 by 28 January and 105,000 by 30 January 2026 (14,000 forks), with 1,374 commits in a single day. Anthropic, whose Claude models powered most installs, asked Steinberger to change the name for trademark reasons; he renamed it Moltbot on 27 January and OpenClaw on 29 January. The hype repriced agent infrastructure: Cloudflare shares rose 9% then 10%+ as analysts argued agents would drive API calls and traffic, and Cloudflare later launched a 'Moltworker' product. Crypto scammers briefly hijacked the GitHub account to shill tokens; Steinberger disavowed any coin.

Still running as the open-source project OpenClaw; Steinberger says it is not a business and favours a foundation or nonprofit, even as the category it popularised attracted venture funding.

The project showed that frontier coding models let one person ship an agent that previously would have required a company-sized engineering team.

Users granted a local, open-source agent full shell access — a trade big vendors would not offer — which made the project's utility and its risk two sides of the same bet.

The trademark collision with Anthropic showed that viral attention outruns legal preparation; the project was renamed twice in three days.

Capital markets repriced agent infrastructure on the back of the project's traffic, visible in Cloudflare's two-day rally.

One person with frontier coding models can ship what once needed a company — but attention this fast arrives without a business model, trademark clearance or security perimeter.

As of September 2026 OpenClaw remains an active open-source project, renamed from Clawdbot via Moltbot in January 2026. Steinberger has explored foundation or nonprofit stewardship rather than commercialisation, and the January viral wave has settled into an ecosystem of deployment guides, managed providers and security tooling around personal agents.
