Background
OpenCode is an open-source AI coding agent for the terminal, desktop and IDE, built by the SST/Anomaly team. Its bet: developers would reject proprietary, single-vendor coding assistants and adopt a free, model-agnostic tool with zero signup friction — in CEO Jay V's words, 'not an AI product, a product designed to use AI.'
Jay V and Frank Wang, roommates at the University of Waterloo, had already built Anomaly and Serverless Stack (SST), which went through Y Combinator in 2021 and grew to 25,000 GitHub stars and profitability. What has to be true
- SST's 25k-star open-source history taught the team that developers adopt tools they can inspect and own, so OpenCode shipped open source first and monetized a gateway rather than the client.
