Jay V and Frank Wang, Waterloo roommates, built Anomaly, then Serverless Stack (SST) through Y Combinator in 2021, growing it to 25,000 GitHub stars and profitability. When Claude Code showed developers wanted terminal AI agents, the team — joined by co-founders Dax Raad and Adam Elmore — bet on openness: OpenCode's first Show HN in May 2025 drew almost no attention.

Within five months it passed 50,000 GitHub stars and 650,000 monthly active users, with Cloudflare among enterprise users and an undisclosed funding round closed; OpenCode Zen, a curated model gateway, began generating several million dollars in annualized revenue.

Still scaling: a March 2026 HN post drew 1,274 points and 618 comments, stars passed 172k by June 2026, and opencode.ai now claims 195k+ stars, 950 contributors and 16M monthly developers — the most-starred open-source coding agent, with desktop and IDE surfaces added.
