OpenRouter bets one API for every AI model; $113M Series B, then Stripe's $7B+ buy
One API for 400+ AI models: OpenRouter hits 8M users and 100T tokens/month, raises $113M at $1.3B, then reportedly sells to Stripe for $7B+.
OpenRouter
What the business is
An AI gateway that lets developers and enterprises access 400+ models — Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI and DeepSeek among them — through one API, routing each task to the best model for cost, accuracy or speed.
Starting capital:$40M Series A in June 2025 led by Andreessen Horowitz and Menlo Ventures with Sequoia, at an estimated $547M post-money (PitchBook); $113M Series B in May 2026 led by CapitalG at a NYT-reported ~$1.3B post-money.
How it started
Founded in 2023 by Alex Atallah (former OpenSea co-founder and CTO) and Louis Vichy. OpenRouter began as a single API to compare and switch LLM providers, and the June 2025 Series A plus explosive usage growth set up the 2026 round.
What happened
On 2026-05-26 OpenRouter announced a $113M Series B led by CapitalG (Alphabet's growth fund) at a reported ~$1.3B valuation, claiming 8M users and 100T tokens processed per month. In late July 2026 the Wall Street Journal reported Stripe acquisition talks; on 2026-08-16 Bloomberg reported a finalized deal for more than $7 billion.
How it ended up
Reportedly acquired: Bloomberg reported on 2026-08-16 that Stripe finalized a deal to buy OpenRouter for over $7B, roughly 5x the May valuation; Stripe told TechCrunch it does not comment on rumors, and the gateway continues to operate.
Background
OpenRouter is an AI gateway founded in 2023 by Alex Atallah (ex-OpenSea co-founder and CTO) and Louis Vichy. It gives developers and enterprises one API to access more than 400 models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI and DeepSeek, letting each task be routed to whichever model wins on cost, accuracy or speed.
The bet was that customers would refuse to standardize on a single AI vendor the way they got locked into SaaS providers — and that a neutral router would capture that switching behavior. The bet compounded: by May 2026 OpenRouter claimed 8 million users and 100 trillion tokens processed per month, up 5x from 5 trillion tokens per week six months earlier.
In June 2025 the company raised a $40M Series A led by a16z and Menlo Ventures with Sequoia at an estimated $547M post-money. On 2026-05-26 it announced a $113M Series B led by CapitalG at a reported $1.3B valuation, hitting the Hacker News front page with 460 points. Three months later Bloomberg reported Stripe had finalized a deal to acquire OpenRouter for more than $7 billion — roughly 5x the Series B valuation — with Stripe declining to comment.
What has to be true
- One API for 400+ models removed per-vendor signup friction and made cost or quality switching a config change, not a migration.
- The industry shift from training to inference to agents multiplied tokens per customer, compounding usage 5x in six months.
- Neutrality — no competing first-party model to favor — made OpenRouter a trusted broker rather than a threat to its suppliers.
- Positioning as 'Stripe for AI' made it the natural transaction layer for model calls, which is exactly the infrastructure Stripe wanted to own.
What can be applied
Build the neutral layer of a fast-shifting market: making every model swappable through one API let OpenRouter own the switching — and become infrastructure worth 5x its valuation in a quarter.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-02, Bloomberg reports Stripe has finalized a deal to acquire OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, roughly five times the ~$1.3B valuation set by the May Series B. Stripe declined to comment, and the gateway continues to operate with 8 million claimed users and access to 400+ models. The WSJ had earlier reported talks at around $10 billion. The deal, if completed, folds the model router into Stripe's ambitions to become the payments and ledger layer for AI transactions.
