What the business is
OVS S.p.A. is an Italian family fashion retailer with over 10% market share in Italy, selling clothes for women, men and children.
The bet
A family-fashion brand priced between Zudio and Uniqlo can win in India with offline stores first, no local partner, and capex funded entirely by the parent.
Starting capital
At least half a million euros per store, funded entirely by the parent; total India investment undisclosed
How it started
OVS India Retail Pvt Ltd was incorporated in 2025. On a December 2025 investor call CEO Stefano Beraldo called India the most important market where OVS is putting energy and some capex. The company entered without a local joint venture partner, at a time when many international brands prefer alliances.
What happened
The first India store, over 9,000 sq ft, opened in Delhi in October 2025. The second, over 11,000 sq ft at Sky City mall in Borivali, Mumbai, opened in March 2026; OVS picked a residential hub over high-rent areas such as Bandra, in line with mass-premium positioning. Managing director Chugh, formerly of Benetton India, said 65-70% of customers are aged 18-34 and women are about 45%.
How it ended up
OVS plans one more Mumbai store in the coming months and four new stores in 2027, with faster expansion later. Its website will take another 12-18 months and multi-channel is 2-3 years away. India revenue is not yet available as the company has operated for less than a year. Globally OVS estimated 2025 revenue up 7% to EUR 1.74 billion.
What has to be true
OVS management calls India its most important growth market for capex and attention, per the CEO's December 2025 investor call.
Mint cites a $184 billion Indian textile and apparel market in 2024-25, about 80% domestic, which leaves headroom for entrants willing to invest patiently.
Family fashion with a strong kids range differentiates OVS from competitors whose kids sections are 10-14% of customers.
A residential-area flagship fits its mass-premium positioning better than a high-rent location.
What can be applied
Going into a crowded market without a local partner raises the parent's capital at risk; the early store-level result matters more than the headline ambition.
Aftermath
As of 2026-03-26 OVS has two Indian stores and says the first is store-level Ebitda positive; it is seeking parent approval to add beauty and footwear. Accessories are 3-5% of revenue. Total investment and India revenue were not disclosed, and Mint noted global brands have had mixed results in India.
