Owala bets one dual-spout bottle plus color turns hydration into a social object

Trove Brands' FreeSip bottle tops US search growth at 99x+ and outsells Stanley online; #owala TikTok views pass 272M.

Owala (Trove Brands)

The betThat drinkers split between straw and chug mouths want one bottle — and that color, not specs, turns hydration into a social object.Scaling

What the business is

Owala (launched March 2020 by Trove Brands, the Utah Sorensen family company) sells FreeSip stainless steel bottles whose patented lid offers both a hidden straw and an open chug spout, in color-blocked and limited-edition finishes priced around $30.

How it started

Owala's brand story began when founder Steve Sorensen noticed gym-goers carrying a straw bottle in one hand and a chug bottle in the other, and asked why drinking had to force a choice between sipping and gulping. The team spent about 18 months developing a leakproof lid with both a hidden straw and an open spout, and Trove Brands launched the brand in March 2020, in the middle of the pandemic.

What happened

The FreeSip design made TIME's 2023 list of the year's best inventions, and sales accelerated from there: by the end of 2024 Owala had sold 4.78 million bottles in the year, up 417.8%, topping Amazon's home and kitchen chart. In August 2025 its monthly online sales passed Stanley's, making it the top-selling insulated bottle brand online in North America, and Amazon North America sales then grew 147%, 321% and 449% year over year across November and December 2025 and January 2026. Trade analyses credit TikTok, which they say contributed about 35% of North American sales in 2025, alongside Target-exclusive color drops that resell for far above retail.

No ending yet — it is still running.

Background

Owala is a US water-bottle brand launched in March 2020 by Trove Brands, the Sorensen family company in Utah. Its signature FreeSip bottle pairs a patented lid with hidden straw and open chug spout with bright, color-blocked, limited-edition finishes.

The founding bet came from a gym observation: people carried one straw bottle and one chug bottle because no single lid served both drinking styles. About 18 months of development produced the dual-spout FreeSip lid, which TIME named one of its best inventions of 2023.

Sales then compounded. Trade analyses report 4.78 million bottles sold in 2024, up 417.8%, and August 2025 as the month Owala's online sales first passed Stanley's in North America; Amazon North America sales grew 147%, 321% and 449% year over year in November, December 2025 and January 2026.

The growth engine is social content plus scarcity: the #owala hashtag has over 272 million TikTok views, TikTok reportedly contributed about 35% of 2025 North American sales, and Target-exclusive color drops turn a $30 bottle into a collectible with a resale market. Exploding Topics' August 2026 list puts Owala at 99x+ US search growth.

What has to be true

  • Removing the straw-versus-chug tradeoff gave Owala a genuinely functional reason to exist in a market full of me-too bottles.
  • Color-blocked bodies and mix-and-match lids turned one product into many collectible combinations, giving owners something to photograph and share.
  • Scarcity mechanics — Color Drop and Target-exclusive editions — created the resale value and late-night demand that made Owala content go viral.
  • User-generated TikTok and Reddit content, not paid ads, carried the brand into the top of Amazon's home and kitchen charts.

What can be applied

In a saturated functional market, sell the social object: give customers a product they can mix, collect and post, and search demand follows the user content.

Aftermath

As of September 5, 2026, Owala is the fastest-rising hydration brand in US search per Exploding Topics (99x+ growth), having passed Stanley as the top-selling insulated bottle online in North America in August 2025. Trade analyses describe continued acceleration through early 2026, Target-exclusive launches driving cross-border demand, and an ecosystem of over 143,000 user-generated TikTok videos. The cited sources are trade and search-trend analyses, not audited statements, so revenue and profit for Trove Brands are not reported; the trajectory rests on Amazon sales-rank and platform data.
