What the business is
Palo Alto Networks is a US cybersecurity company; Portkey, founded in 2023, runs an LLMOps platform that is a single access layer for 1,600+ AI models.
The bet
A centralised AI gateway that authenticates, authorises and monitors every model interaction is the control plane enterprises need to secure autonomous agents.
How it started
Portkey was founded in 2023 by Ayush Garg and Rohit Agarwal as a gateway for routing requests across models, with fallbacks, observability, policy enforcement, guardrails and cost tracking.
What happened
Palo Alto Networks announced its intent to acquire Portkey for undisclosed terms, expected to close in its fiscal fourth quarter of 2026 subject to approvals. Nikesh Arora said you cannot build an agentic enterprise without a centralised control plane. Portkey's CEO said the startup had evolved from a team tool into a core infrastructure layer and that joining Palo Alto would help it become an industry standard.
What has to be true
AI agents access sensitive data and act for users, so enterprises lack visibility and centralised governance over them
A gateway already sits between applications and models, making it a natural place to enforce security policy
Portkey's scale, trillions of tokens a month, gave Palo Alto a proven product instead of a prototype
Palo Alto was doubling down on a comprehensive AI security stack under Prisma AIRS
What can be applied
As AI agents spread, security vendors buy the traffic chokepoint rather than building it, and a gateway startup's best exit can be as the enforcement layer of a platform.
Aftermath
As of 1 May 2026 the deal was announced but not closed; completion was expected in Palo Alto's fiscal Q4 2026 pending approvals. Garg said Portkey would keep developing AI security and control as a foundational layer for enterprises.
