Panera is a soup-and-sandwich cafe chain owned by JAB Holding; Miso Robotics sells restaurant kitchen robots and AI systems.

Automating brew monitoring frees staff for customers and keeps coffee fresh for subscribers, a case Panera made on service, not cost.

Miso Robotics: over $50M crowdfunded from restaurant chains, VCs and ordinary investors since 2016.

Panera launched its Unlimited Sip Club, unlimited coffee and tea for $8.99 a month, more than two years earlier to lure customers and change breakfast habits.

Miso, already working with Chipotle, White Castle and Inspire Brands, launched its CookRight Coffee system, and Panera was piloting it by April 2022.

Only two Panera locations were testing the system, and Panera said it would decide within weeks how fast and how widely to scale. Miso expected thousands of partner restaurants to install CookRight technology by year-end.

Restaurants across the industry were turning to automation as labor became scarcer and costlier.

Panera's $8.99 subscription made coffee quality and consistency central to bringing customers back.

Automating monitoring and analytics, rather than staffing, let Panera test the idea in two cafes at a price of a few hundred dollars a month.

Framing automation as help for staff and quality rather than as labor savings matches the subscription promise: members pay for good coffee, not for a leaner kitchen.

As of 12 April 2022, two Panera cafes were testing CookRight Coffee and a scaling decision was due within weeks. Panera, privately held by JAB, did not disclose Sip Club subscriber numbers and declined to say whether its public-listing plans had changed.
