Patreon connects creators with paying fans through memberships; Moment was a livestream platform for ticketed events and experiences.

Moment had raised $13.5M, including a $12M Series A with Halsey, UTA Ventures, Zaiko and Forerunner Ventures; Patreon's acquisition terms were not disclosed and needed no regulatory approval, implying under ~$100M

Moment, formerly Moment House, was co-founded in Los Angeles in 2019 by CEO Arjun Mehta, COO Nigel Egrar and CTO Shray Bansal, helping creators host live-streamed, ticketed experiences like concerts and live podcast recordings.

Patreon, co-founded by Jack Conte and CTO Sam Yam in 2013, had grown to a $4B valuation on a $155M raise in 2021, then laid off 80 employees — about 17% — in September 2022 as pandemic growth cooled. Conte told Axios live experiences 'really tighten communities' and add 'yet another form of revenue' for creators.

The deal closed on Monday, October 16, 2023, bringing all of Moment's employees to Patreon, which plans to fully integrate Moment's products into its creator suite. It is Patreon's fourth product acquisition after Subbable (2015), Kit and Memberful (2018) — and the first not focused on memberships.

Patreon bought the top-requested creator feature rather than building it, speeding time to revenue.

The acquisition diversifies Patreon past memberships into experiences, hedging membership churn.

It marks a strategic turn: the first of four acquisitions aimed at community rather than payments infrastructure.

When social platforms optimize for virality, paid communities need shared moments: the acquisition that matters is the one that adds a revenue line members can't get elsewhere.

As of October 17, 2023, Moment's team had joined Patreon with full product integration planned; Conte declined to disclose terms or Patreon's profitability, and said an IPO made sense one day but there were no plans for it right now.
