Pennylane's accountant-channel bet: from €40M unicorn round to €175M Series E at $4.25B
Pennylane bet France's expert-comptables would pull their SME clients onto one accounting-banking-payments platform; five years in it passed €100M ARR.
Pennylane
What the business is
Cloud accounting and financial-management platform for French SMEs and the accounting firms that serve them, bundling bookkeeping with bank accounts, cards, payments and e-invoicing.
Starting capital:€40M round at 'just over €1B' valuation (Feb 2024, unicorn); €75M at ~$2.2B (Apr 2025); €175M Series E led by TCV with Blackstone Growth (Jan 2026).
How it started
Founded in Paris in January 2020 by École Polytechnique alumni including CEO Arthur Waller, Pennylane set out to rebuild how French accounting firms do production work — software for the accountant rather than the CFO, betting that firms would bring their SME clients along. It added fintech features such as business bank accounts and cards, and its SME user base grew about 40x in two years.
What happened
In February 2024 Pennylane became France's latest unicorn with a €40M round at 'just over €1B', serving 2,000 accounting firms and 120,000 SMEs. It made its first acquisition in October 2024 (connector startup Billy), then raised €75M in April 2025 at roughly $2.2B valuation (Sequoia, CapitalG, Meritech, DST Global) to expand beyond France as European e-invoicing mandates arrived.
How it ended up
Still scaling: Pennylane passed €100M ARR in 2025, claimed ~700,000 client companies and 6,000+ accounting-firm partners by December 2025, and closed a €175M Series E in January 2026 at about $4.25B valuation with TCV and Blackstone Growth, pushing into Germany ahead of its 2028 e-invoicing deadline.
Background
Pennylane is a French cloud platform for accounting production and financial management, used by both SMEs and the accounting firms that serve them. Its bet was that expert-comptables — France's regulated accounting firms — are the strongest distribution channel in SMB software: win the firm, and every one of its clients arrives on the same platform.
Founded in Paris in January 2020 by École Polytechnique alumni including CEO Arthur Waller, Pennylane grew from a bookkeeping tool into an all-in-one finance stack with business bank accounts, payment cards and billing. TechCrunch covered its February 2024 unicorn round ('just over €1B') when 2,000 accounting firms and 120,000 SMEs were on the platform.
The e-invoicing wave then became a tailwind: France requires digital invoicing from September 2026 and Germany from 2028. Pennylane raised €75M in April 2025 at about $2.2B, passed €100M ARR in 2025, and closed a €175M Series E in January 2026 led by TCV with Blackstone Growth at about $4.25B valuation, claiming roughly 700,000 client companies and 6,000+ partner accounting firms.
What has to be true
- Accountants were a compounding channel: each firm onboarding its clients brought hundreds of SMEs with one sales motion instead of a logo-by-logo fight.
- One shared platform for accountants and business owners created lock-in through sync — both sides had to be on the same tool to share the books in real time.
- Expanding from accounting into banking, cards and e-invoicing raised revenue per customer and defended against fintechs like Qonto moving into accounting.
- Regulatory deadlines (French and German e-invoicing mandates) forced a whole market to digitize at once, converting a legal requirement into acquisition.
What can be applied
A distribution bet can beat a product bet: Pennylane made accountants its channel, each firm multiplying its reach, then monetized the same base with banking and payments.
Aftermath
As of September 2026 Pennylane is a privately held 'centaure': >€100M ARR, ~900 employees (roughly 400 engineers), 700,000 claimed client companies and 6,000+ accounting-firm partners. After the January 2026 €175M Series E at about $4.25B valuation, it is expanding into Germany ahead of the 2028 e-invoicing mandate and pushing AI-assisted bookkeeping, with profitability not yet reported.
