Pigment bets AI-native planning replaces spreadsheets; Paris unicorn at $145M Series D
Ex-Criteo and ex-Google founders build a business planning platform against Oracle and SAP, tripling revenue to a $145M ICONIQ-led Series D and unicorn status.
Pigment
What the business is
Pigment is a SaaS business planning (xP&A) platform for finance, sales and HR teams: it ingests data from ERP, HRIS and data lakes, builds budgets and forecasts, runs scenario planning, and — from 2025 — deploys AI agents (Analyst, Planner, Modeler) that automate reporting and forecasting.
Starting capital:$145M Series D led by ICONIQ Growth (announced April 2024), with participation from Sandberg Bernthal Venture Partners, IVP, Meritech, Greenoaks and Felix Capital.
How it started
Founded in Paris in 2019 by Eléonore Crespo (ex-Google and ex-Index Ventures) and Romain Niccoli (co-founder and CTO of adtech success Criteo), Pigment set out to build a modern business planning platform for large companies, targeting a market that still ran on error-prone spreadsheets and inflexible legacy tools from Oracle and SAP.
What happened
Pigment scaled through consecutive raises: by 2023 it had tripled revenue and doubled its customer base, with half of clients based in the US. In April 2024 it raised a $145M Series D led by ICONIQ Growth — a round TechCrunch called rare for France — with Crespo citing IVP benchmarks placing Pigment in the top 5% of SaaS companies for revenue growth. In March 2025 the company unveiled a roadmap of three AI agents (Analyst, Planner, Modeler) to make planning proactive and autonomous, with the Analyst Agent entering private preview.
How it ended up
Still scaling: France24 profiled Pigment at VivaTech 2026 as one of France's few tech unicorns, valued at over $1 billion, with AI now central to its planning platform; no IPO or acquisition announced.
Background
Pigment is a Paris-based business planning platform built for large companies: finance teams use it to budget, forecast and report, sales teams to set and track quotas, and HR to plan headcount against strategy. Instead of spreadsheets or legacy Oracle/SAP tools, it pulls data from ERP, HRIS and data lakes into one real-time, collaborative system — what the company calls xP&A.
The company was founded in 2019 by Eléonore Crespo, who previously worked at Google and VC firm Index Ventures, and Romain Niccoli, co-founder and CTO of Criteo. Its pitch was that modern businesses had outgrown spreadsheet-based planning: Pigment's own research said 89% of finance leaders made monthly decisions from inaccurate or incomplete data. By 2023 it had tripled revenue and doubled its customer base, with clients including Unilever, Datadog, Kayak and Merck, and half of its clients in the US.
In April 2024 Pigment raised a $145M Series D led by ICONIQ Growth — a round TechCrunch called 'a rare French tech mega-round' after a year in which French software funding fell sharply. In March 2025 it unveiled a roadmap of three AI agents — Analyst, Planner and Modeler — to automate planning and forecasting. As of mid-2026 France24 featured it at VivaTech as one of France's few unicorns, valued above $1 billion, with AI now central to the product.
What has to be true
- Spreadsheet and legacy planning tools were visibly failing at enterprise scale, giving a modern platform a clear wedge.
- Founder pedigree — Criteo's CTO plus an Index Ventures/Google alum — carried weight with enterprise buyers and investors.
- Expanding from finance into sales, HR and supply chain turned the product into a collaboration platform, not a niche tool.
- Winning US clients early decoupled growth from the smaller French market.
- The 2025 AI-agent roadmap converted the platform's accumulated planning data into a defensible AI layer.
What can be applied
To take on giants like Oracle and SAP, don't out-feature them: make one core job so much better that CFOs switch, then let AI compound the lead once the platform holds all the company's numbers.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-02 Pigment is scaling as a French unicorn: France24 covered it at VivaTech 2026 as valued above $1 billion, and the company's site now markets agentic AI — Analyst, Planner and Modeler agents plus natural-language AI — as the core of business planning. It continues to expand its customer base and product footprint in North America and Europe; no revenue figures, IPO or acquisition have been announced.
