What the business is
Pipe is a marketplace where companies with recurring revenue raise capital by selling future revenues at a discount — the 'Nasdaq for revenue.'
The bet
That Pipe's next phase — from product-market fit to global scale — needs a veteran at-scale operator, not its 0-to-1 founder team.
Starting capital
Raised over $300M lifetime (Greenspring, Craft Ventures, Counterpoint Global, SBI Investment and others); $250M at a $2B valuation in May 2021.
How it started
Founded in 2019 in Miami by Hurst, Mangel and Allarakhia as the 'Nasdaq for revenue'; Hurst was the company's very public frontman through the $250M round.
What happened
In March 2021 Pipe expanded beyond SaaS to any recurring-revenue business, and in February 2022 acquired Purely Capital to enter entertainment financing. By November 2022, over 50% of trading volume came from non-SaaS verticals, with Pipe Entertainment among its fastest-growing.
What has to be true
The founders self-diagnosed a stage mismatch: what they call 0-to-1 building skills are not at-scale operating skills, and they said so publicly.
The tell was the search itself — the COO role they defined in Q2 2022 kept matching a CEO profile, so they upgraded the ask.
Doing it from strength (3x revenue trajectory, five years of runway, no layoffs) kept the handover a decision rather than a distress sale of control.
Leaving the founders as largest shareholders kept the incoming CEO's incentives aligned with theirs.
What can be applied
Founders who know their own ceiling convert it into a hiring spec: a COO search that keeps redefining itself into a CEO is the team admitting the company outgrew them.
Aftermath
As of November 22, 2022 the veteran-CEO search was underway with a global executive recruitment firm; Mangel held the interim CEO seat while Hurst led the search and transition. TechCrunch published a follow-up piece after the article appeared.
