Polyarc was a Seattle video game developer best known for the Moss virtual reality adventure games, founded in 2015 by three ex-Bungie staff.

A studio built on one VR franchise can survive by widening to a strategy spin-off and a non-VR re-release of its games.

Chris Alderson, Danny Bulla and Tam Armstrong, all former Bungie employees who had worked on Destiny, founded Polyarc as a startup in 2015. Its first and best-known release was 2018's Moss, where players guide a young mouse named Quill through a fantasy world to save her uncle.

Moss: Book II followed in 2022 and the strategy spin-off Glassbreakers in 2025. In 2026 Polyarc released Moss: The Forgotten Relic for PC and console, which collected both Moss games into one non-VR experience. In March 2026 it announced a significant reduction in company size, and in January Meta had deemphasised VR, reportedly in favour of wearables and AI.

On 2026-09-11 Polyarc announced on LinkedIn that its time had come to an end. GeekWire reported 29 employees dismissed, including all three founders, and Polyarc published a list of affected staff to help them find new roles. No specific reason for the closure was given.

No official reason was given; GeekWire connects the closure to a weak VR sector rather than to a stated cause.

Meta, the largest VR player through Quest headsets, deemphasised VR in January 2026, reportedly favouring wearable computing and AI research.

Polyarc had cut staff significantly in March 2026, nearly six months before it closed.

Its last release was a non-VR version of the Moss games, showing the studio was seeking customers beyond headsets.

A studio that depends on one platform's installed base carries that platform owner's strategy risk; porting a flagship to other platforms may come too late once the base shrinks.

As of 2026-09-11 Polyarc has closed and published a list of the 29 affected employees to help with job searches. GeekWire notes that other VR studios, such as Camouflaj, were cut hard after Meta's retreat, and that Valve's Steam Frame has no release date.
