How it started
François Vonthron and Antoine Yuen founded Poppins in 2018 to attack a structural shortage: France has roughly 1.3 million dyslexic children but only about 25,000 speech therapists, leaving 12-24 month waits for assessment. The app trains reading through 31 game-based rhythm and written-language exercises. France then created the channel Poppins needed: decree 2023-232 of 30 March 2023 introduced PECAN, an early-access reimbursement scheme for innovative digital medical devices (therapeutic devices and remote-monitoring devices) launched in April 2023.
What happened
Poppins raised €4M in 2021, €8M in 2023, and €5M in April 2025 (Racine2/MGEN-led, with Bpifrance's Patient Autonome fund, Eurazeo, Kurma Partners, BNP Paribas Développement and Verve Ventures), bringing total funding to about €20M. It used the money to run the clinical work and regulatory path to become a reimbursed digital medical device. For two years every PECAN order went to remote-monitoring devices; Poppins Clinical kept pushing as the first therapeutic candidate.

The Ministry of Health's arrêté of 17 July 2026, published in the Journal Officiel on 21 July 2026, made Poppins Clinical the first therapeutic digital medical device covered under PECAN: an initial package for up to three months plus monthly renewals, capped at €780 per patient per year. A rectifying arrêté of 29 July 2026 followed, explicitly allowing speech therapists to prescribe and renew, after the FNO protested that the first version excluded them.
Background
Bmotion Technologies, founded in 2018 by François Vonthron and Antoine Yuen as an École Polytechnique spin-out, sells Poppins Clinical: a video-game digital medical device that trains reading in children aged 7-11 with specific learning disorders involving reading deficits, designed to be prescribed in addition to speech therapy. The company's founding case was the gap between France's roughly 1.3 million dyslexic children and about 25,000 speech therapists, with 12-24 month waits for a first assessment.
The strategic bet was that France's PECAN scheme - created by decree 2023-232 of 30 March 2023 and launched in April 2023 to give innovative digital medical devices temporary reimbursement while evidence matures - would eventually pay for therapeutic apps.
