Poppins Clinical becomes France's first reimbursed therapeutic app under PECAN

Bmotion Technologies makes Poppins Clinical, a prescription video-game digital medical device that trains reading in children aged 7-11 with specific learning disorders, designed as home-based therapy complementing speech therapy.

That France's PECAN channel will pay for therapeutic digital apps - so building clinical evidence and winning reimbursement beats selling subscriptions family by family.

About €20M raised across three rounds: €4M in 2021, €8M in 2023 (Eurazeo and others), and €5M in April 2025 led by Racine2 (MGEN's impact fund, managed by Serena and makesense).

François Vonthron and Antoine Yuen founded Poppins in 2018 to attack a structural shortage: France has roughly 1.3 million dyslexic children but only about 25,000 speech therapists, leaving 12-24 month waits for assessment. The app trains reading through 31 game-based rhythm and written-language exercises. France then created the channel Poppins needed: decree 2023-232 of 30 March 2023 introduced PECAN, an early-access reimbursement scheme for innovative digital medical devices (therapeutic devices and remote-monitoring devices) launched in April 2023.

Poppins raised €4M in 2021, €8M in 2023, and €5M in April 2025 (Racine2/MGEN-led, with Bpifrance's Patient Autonome fund, Eurazeo, Kurma Partners, BNP Paribas Développement and Verve Ventures), bringing total funding to about €20M. It used the money to run the clinical work and regulatory path to become a reimbursed digital medical device. For two years every PECAN order went to remote-monitoring devices; Poppins Clinical kept pushing as the first therapeutic candidate.

The Ministry of Health's arrêté of 17 July 2026, published in the Journal Officiel on 21 July 2026, made Poppins Clinical the first therapeutic digital medical device covered under PECAN: an initial package for up to three months plus monthly renewals, capped at €780 per patient per year. A rectifying arrêté of 29 July 2026 followed, explicitly allowing speech therapists to prescribe and renew, after the FNO protested that the first version excluded them.

Without a payer, a therapeutic app competes on family subscriptions; PECAN gave Poppins a route to national reimbursement that no amount of consumer marketing could match.

The decree's evidence requirements favoured a company that had invested years in a placebo-controlled trial instead of shipping fast and iterating.

Being first mattered: Poppins' order set the template for every therapeutic digital medical device that follows, and its 2026 coverage dates were reported across medical press.

The prescribing fight with speech therapists shows the channel only works if the professionals who deliver the care can prescribe it - a rectifying decree followed within eight days.

Reimbursement is the real product for digital therapeutics: matching evidence requirements early lets a startup define the category before professional guilds even fight the rules.

As of 2026-09-02 Poppins Clinical is reimbursed under PECAN for children aged 7-11 with reading-deficit learning disorders, coverage effective from August 2026: an initial package for up to three months plus monthly renewals capped at €780 per patient per year, prescribed by doctors or - after the 29 July 2026 rectifying decree - speech therapists. The company is extending the platform to ADHD, and the PECAN precedent gives other French digital-therapeutics startups a proven route to reimbursement, while the FNO keeps demanding systematic data-sharing with treating therapists.
