Prewave bets EU CSDDD makes supply-chain monitoring a must-buy; $67.5M Series B in 2024
Vienna AI platform scans 400+ languages to flag supplier risk; bet EU due-diligence law makes monitoring every chain tier a must-buy.
Prewave
What the business is
AI supply-chain risk platform that monitors millions of supplier nodes for disruptions, ESG issues and sanctions by scanning news, social media, certifications and official data in 400+ languages.
Starting capital:€11M Series A (2022), €18M Series A+ (2023), €63M Series B (2024) — more than €90M total
How it started
Founded in 2017 in Vienna by Dr Lisa Smith and Harald Nitschinger as a spin-off of TU Wien; built an academic-bred AI engine that scans news, social media, certifications and government data to predict and detect supplier risk; raised an €11M Series A in Sept 2022 as Germany's Lieferkettengesetz was taking shape.
What happened
€18M A+ led by Creandum in May 2023; 3x revenue growth in 2023; over 200 customers incl. Volkswagen, Volvo, Ferrari, Lufthansa and Dr Oetker; June 2024: €63M/$67.5M Series B led by Hedosophia, days before the EU CSDDD was published (5 Jul) and entered into force (25 Jul 2024); platform maps and monitors millions of nodes across 140 risk types.
How it ended up
Still scaling; after the 2024 Series B the stated priority was global expansion, with the US market first.
Background
Prewave reads the supply chain the way a newsroom reads the wire: its AI scans news, social media, certifications, annual reports and government data across 400+ languages to predict and detect supplier risk — from disasters and financial stress to sanctions and ESG violations. Founded in Vienna in 2017 by Dr Lisa Smith and Harald Nitschinger as a TU Wien spin-off, it maps millions of supplier nodes and covers 140 risk types.
The bet was that supply-chain due diligence was becoming law, not CSR. Germany's Lieferkettengesetz started applying in 2023, and the EU's Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive entered into force on 25 July 2024, obliging large companies to monitor human-rights and environmental risks across their value chains. Prewave turned each deadline into contracts: 200+ enterprises, including Volkswagen, Volvo, Ferrari, Lufthansa and Dr Oetker, and 3x revenue growth in 2023.
Investors followed the regulatory curve: €11M Series A in 2022, €18M A+ in May 2023, and a €63M Series B led by Hedosophia in June 2024, bringing total funding past €90M. The company is still scaling, with the US as its stated next market — the same bet, one jurisdiction larger.
What has to be true
- Every new due-diligence law adds companies to the mandated buyer list, which is why funding kept arriving right before each compliance deadline.
- AI is the only practical way to monitor thousands of suppliers in hundreds of languages, so the regulation and the technology arrived at the same moment.
- Customers like Volkswagen and Ferrari show that compliance buyers, not CSR departments, became the paying market.
- A Series B days before the CSDDD entered into force suggests investors treat regulation as the revenue trigger.
What can be applied
A compliance deadline is a go-to-market calendar: each new due-diligence law enlarges the buyer list — but only for the startup that already built the product for the first law.
Aftermath
As of September 2026 Prewave continues to operate from Vienna as an AI supply-chain risk and compliance platform with more than 200 enterprise customers across Europe, and global expansion — starting with the US — was its stated priority after the June 2024 Series B. Its addressable market keeps widening as EU member states transpose the CSDDD (due by 2026-27) and enforcement phases begin from 2027.
