The zero-to-one founder-CEO should hand over to a growth-stage executive once the company reaches its execution phase

$7M Series A (2021) led by 40 North Media, the related investment business of Standard Industries, with private equity giant TPG Growth.

Founded in 2021 by Jon Kelly (ex-Vanity Fair, co-founder of The Hive), Joe Purzycki (co-founder of podcast company Luminary) and Max Tcheyan (early employee at The Athletic), with Condé Nast veteran Liz Gough joining shortly after as co-founder and COO. Purzycki and Kelly had met as advisors at TPG.

By May 2023 paid subscribers had more than doubled year over year and H1 advertising revenue was up 200 percent. With a new financing round to finalize, Kelly told staff Purzycki — 'incredibly gifted at operationalizing start-ups during the incredibly fraught zero-to-one stage' — would exit, stay as advisor during transition, and that the company had begun a search for a successor with growth-stage experience, with full support of founding investors Standard and TPG.

The timing makes the bet legible: changing CEOs right before a raise tells investors the company sees itself entering a scale phase, not a founder story.

The role was honored, not erased — Purzycki was praised publicly for exactly the skill the company no longer needed most.

Continuity was engineered: the founding editorial, product and operations leads absorbed duties while a growth-stage search ran.

Founder transitions go smoothly when framed as phase changes: naming the zero-to-one-to-execution handoff before a fundraise turns a departure into a plan.

As of May 8, 2023, Purzycki was advising through the transition, the founders were running the company day to day, and the successor search targeted operators with growth-stage experience as the financing round moved toward completion.
