What the business is
Operates one of the world's largest API marketplaces, helping businesses find, integrate and manage third-party and internal APIs.
The bet
That a ruthless product focus and customer success can right-size an API marketplace that tried to compete on too many fronts.
Starting capital
$150 million Series D raised in March 2022, led by SoftBank's Vision Fund 2; other backers include a16z, M12, Qumra, Viola Growth
How it started
Founded by Iddo Gino, RapidAPI built an API marketplace valued at $1 billion; in November 2022 it rebranded to Rapid, touting 4 million developers, 40,000+ APIs and new enterprise clients like Formula 1's Scuderia AlphaTauri and Sun Life Financial.
What happened
In April 2023, a week after Marc Friend replaced founder Iddo Gino as CEO, the company announced 'a significant restructuring': about half its roughly 200-person team — an estimated 115 people across Europe, Tel Aviv and San Francisco — would be cut, and all open roles closed.
What has to be true
The company had doubled to 200 employees in a year and, in its own CEO's words, 'tried to compete on too many fronts as a product company.'
A brand-new CEO took over specifically to run the restructuring, with founder Iddo Gino moving to a technical advisor role.
The 50% cut spans sales, recruiting, engineering, product and marketing, and all open roles were closed to force prioritization.
What can be applied
A company that grew by competing on every front has to be cut on purpose: new leadership is often the only way to pick focus.
Aftermath
As of the April 2023 restructuring, Rapid said it would reduce team size by around 50%, close all open roles and rebalance investments, with Friend promising discipline on product focus and 'ruthless' customer success.
