Rilo's $1M AI marketing workflow bet ended in an Adobe acquisition in 18 months

IIT batchmates bet GTM teams would build marketing workflows with AI agents; 10,000+ users later, Adobe took the team and shut the product.

What the business is

An AI platform that let marketing and sales teams build custom workflows for competitor intelligence, content repurposing and distribution, and sales call analysis.

Starting capital$1M seed at a $10M valuation from Peak XV Partners, DeVC, and Day Zero Ventures

How it started

IIT batchmates Georgi Boby and Dhruv Jaglan founded Rilo in 2025, betting that AI would move beyond engineers into hands-on marketing and sales work. Their tool automated the creation, deployment, and tracking of campaigns, and surfaced action items from calls and meetings.

What happened

Rilo raised $1M at a $10M valuation from Peak XV, DeVC, and Day Zero. Founder Dhruv Jaglan's LinkedIn announced that more than 10,000 people had tried the product. Around 2026 Adobe was hunting for AI marketing capabilities after buying Semrush for $1.9B in 2025, and rivals Canva were bolting marketing automation onto their suite.

How it ended up

On Sept 2, 2026 Adobe confirmed a deal — technology licensing plus the six-person team — in its second acquisition from India. Rilo shut down; existing customers lost access; investors were expected to receive an exit.

Background

Rilo was founded in 2025 by IIT batchmates Georgi Boby and Dhruv Jaglan with a single thesis: AI would soon write, deploy, and track marketing campaigns, and go-to-market teams would want to assemble those workflows themselves. The product let teams create custom workflows for competitor intelligence, content repurposing and distribution, and sales call analysis — positioning itself against capabilities in Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Work rather than against traditional marketing suites.

The startup raised $1 million at a $10 million valuation from Peak XV, DeVC, and Day Zero Ventures, and Jaglan reported on LinkedIn that more than 10,000 people had tried the tool. Less than two years after founding, on September 2, 2026, Adobe confirmed an acquisition involving technology licensing and team acquisition — its second from India after Rephrase.ai in 2023. Deal terms were not disclosed.

As part of the deal Adobe integrated part of Rilo's IP and took on the six-member team. Rilo itself shut down: the platform stopped being available to customers. Day Zero's Rahul Gupta told TechCrunch the workflow-builder product was 'way ahead of the curve' and valuable to Adobe's customer-experience suite, which Adobe was expanding after its $1.9B Semrush deal in 2025.

The case is a sprint, not a marathon: a seed-stage, six-person startup went from founding to an Adobe exit in roughly 18 months, mostly on the strength of a workflow-builder product that matched the moment when enterprises started treating AI agents as part of their marketing stack.

What has to be true

  • The bet matched a fast-moving shift: enterprises were already adopting tools to create, deploy, and track AI-driven campaigns, so buyers understood the product instantly.
  • By building a workflow assembler rather than another point tool, Rilo escaped comparison with incumbents and looked like a platform piece Adobe and Canva were both buying.
  • Adobe was actively consolidating mid-market marketing tech (Semrush, Rephrase.ai), so a small AI workflow team fit a known acquisition playbook.
  • The exit depended on a strategic buyer's roadmap, not on Rilo's revenue — which is why the product could be shut down immediately after the deal.

What can be applied

A tiny team can sell out fast if it proves users want a workflow, not a tool — but an acquisition that brings a team and kills a product is a bet on the buyers' roadmap, not on the market's.

Aftermath

As of September 2026 Rilo has ceased operating: Adobe took on the six-person team and licensed the technology, and the founders moved to Adobe to continue their mission 'at a whole new scale,' in Boby's words. Existing customers were shut out of the platform. The deal signaled Adobe's appetite for AI workflow automation in marketing — it bought Semrush for $1.9B in 2025 and Rephrase.ai in 2023 — while rivals Canva made parallel acquisitions of Simtheory and Ortto to add the same capabilities.
