What the business is

Riverlane sells Deltaflow, a quantum error-correction stack of custom chips and software that tracks, predicts and fixes qubit errors in real time so quantum computers can run long, useful computations.

Starting capital$75M Series C announced 2024-08-05, led by Planet First Partners with ETF Partners and Singapore's EDBI joining; existing backers Cambridge Innovation Capital, Amadeus Capital Partners, NSSIF and Altair also invested.

How it started

Steve Brierley, then a Cambridge computational-mathematics research fellow, founded Riverlane in 2016 to work on quantum algorithms. By 2019 he concluded that fragile qubits and error rates, not algorithm design, would block useful machines, so the company pivoted to error correction and moved closer to hardware.

What happened

By mid-2024 Riverlane had more than 100 engineers, named Rigetti, Alice & Bob, QuEra, Infleqtion, Atlantic Quantum, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the UK NQCC as customers or partners, and published a QEC roadmap. In August 2024 it raised a $75M Series C led by Planet First Partners, Europe's first quantum-startup Series C, at a valuation above $400M. On 2025-07-22 it announced Deltaflow 2 was live in a UK commercial data centre (CentreSquare, co-located with OQC hardware), the first dedicated QEC deployment in a UK commercial setting, under the UK-funded DECIDE project; on 2025-09-04 it announced Deltaflow 2 would be installed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's HPC ecosystem, home of the Frontier supercomputer.

Background

Riverlane is a Cambridge, UK startup founded in 2016 by Steve Brierley, then a research fellow in computational mathematics, to make quantum computers useful. Its bet is that error rates, not qubit counts or algorithm design, are what stand between noisy prototype machines and computers that outperform supercomputers, so it builds the error-correction layer rather than a quantum processor.

Starting as a quantum-algorithm company, Riverlane pivoted around 2019 after concluding that fragile qubits would block scaling. The resulting product, Deltaflow, combines a custom error-correction chip on FPGA hardware with software that decodes qubit errors in real time, and is deliberately compatible with every major qubit platform so the company wins regardless of which hardware approach dominates.

By August 2024 Riverlane had more than 100 engineers and a partner list including Rigetti, Alice & Bob, QuEra, Infleqtion, Atlantic Quantum, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the UK National Quantum Computing Centre. A $75M Series C led by Planet First Partners, with ETF Partners and Singapore's EDBI joining, made it Europe's first quantum startup to reach a Series C, at a valuation above $400M.

Through 2025 Deltaflow moved from claims to deployments: on 2025-07-22 Riverlane announced Deltaflow 2 running in a UK commercial data centre co-located with OQC hardware, the first dedicated quantum error-correction deployment in a UK commercial setting; on 2025-09-04 it announced Deltaflow 2 would be installed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's HPC ecosystem, which hosts the Frontier supercomputer. The company ties the work to the UK's MegaQuOp target of one million error-corrected operations by 2028.

What has to be true

  • Quantum qubits fail too often for useful computation; Riverlane says today's machines run only hundreds of operations before failing, making error correction a precondition, not an add-on.
  • By staying hardware-agnostic, Riverlane avoided betting on which qubit technology wins; Deltaflow supports superconducting, trapped-ion, spin and neutral-atom platforms.

Aftermath

As of 2026-07-12, Riverlane was still private and still led by Brierley, marking ten years since launch. Deltaflow 2 had been deployed in a UK commercial quantum data centre with OQC and was announced for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (installation scheduled to complete by end of September 2025); Riverlane was also working with Infleqtion, Rigetti and others through the UK NQCC toward fault-tolerant machines. The cited sources report no acquisition or wind-down.
