Rokid is a Hangzhou-based AR company building AI glasses (Rokid Glasses) and a spatial-computing operating system (YodaOS), selling to consumers plus industrial and museum clients.

That the next computing platform is normal-looking AI glasses, and that a small Hangzhou company can win it by iterating for a decade before the market arrives.

Over ¥3.5B (~$500M) raised across 13+ rounds by November 2025 — backers include IDG, 元璟 (Yuanjing), Temasek, Credit Suisse, Haitong and state funds (钛媒体, 2025-11-17); a C+ round involving 浦东创投 landed in October 2025; January 2026 capital increases added Lens Technology and SenseTime as shareholders (Jiemian, 2026-03-27).

In 2012, Zhu Mingming — then head of Alibaba's M studio — watched Google Glass at Google I/O and concluded that AR glasses, not phones, would be the next human-computer interface. He left Alibaba in 2014 to found Rokid. With the market not yet existing, the company sold smart speakers from 2016 and poured the cash into AR research, shipping its first AR glasses in 2018 and the consumer Rokid Air in 2021.

B-end business — roughly 60% share of industrial AR, plus 200+ museum partnerships — funded the consumer push. In February 2025 a video of Zhu delivering a teleprompter-free keynote wearing Rokid Glasses went viral; the product launched around ¥3,000, sold 40,000+ units in five days, and ended the year with ~300,000 orders, three times the plan, while supply-chain bottlenecks pushed deliveries into 2026. Overseas, the August 2025 Kickstarter broke XR crowdfunding records, and Omdia ranked Rokid #2 globally for 2025.

Still private and racing an IPO: CSRC filing completed February 2026 and an HKEX main-board listing was targeted for mid-2026 (Jiemian, 2026-03-27), though no listing was confirmed by 16 July 2026. The competitive pressure is steep — Meta holds ~85% of the global AI-glasses market, Apple, Huawei and Xiaomi are entering — and OFweek reports Rokid absent from IDC's US and Western Europe rankings in Q1 2026, with US retail sales thin.

Zhu's conviction came from first principles: every computing era changed the interface, and glasses are the natural fit for an AI assistant that sees and hears the world.

A decade of cash-flow businesses (speakers, B-end AR) let the company stay alive while the consumer market did not yet exist.

The product constraint — looks like normal glasses — became a differentiator: 49 grams, prescription support, and a price around half of Meta's.

Viral moments (the teleprompter keynote, the Kickstarter record) converted engineering patience into consumer demand almost overnight.

The head start is fragile: giants with deeper supply chains and capital entered exactly when demand proved real.

Category conviction is a real edge if you survive until the market arrives — but a decade of head start evaporates when giants enter; moats must move from product to supply chain, ecosystem, capital.

As of 16 July 2026, Rokid is still private and scaling: Omdia data puts it #2 globally and #1 in China for 2025 AI-glasses shipments, with the #1 slot in display-equipped glasses, and monthly capacity has passed 500,000 units. It is expanding across Japan, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand (a Makuake campaign closed at ¥636M, a platform record), while US retail remains thin — OFweek says Rokid did not appear in IDC's Q1 2026 US and Western Europe rankings. A Hong Kong IPO was targeted for mid-2026 after a February 2026 CSRC filing, but no listing was confirmed by the July 2026 source date.
