Rork: broke founders bet prompts replace Xcode — viral tweet, a16z, PH #1, $15M

Two nearly broke founders bet people will build iPhone apps by typing prompts; a viral tweet, a16z's $2.8M seed and PH #1 Rork Max followed.

Rork

The betThat describing an app in plain English replaces writing Swift and using Xcode — so 'Lovable for mobile' wins where web vibe-coders are too crowded.Scaling

What the business is

Rork is an AI platform that turns text prompts into publishable iOS and Android apps (Swift, React Native, Expo); its Rork Max product targets every Apple platform as a web-based Xcode replacement.

Starting capital$2.8M seed led by a16z Speedrun (May 2025), then $15M seed led by Left Lane Capital with Peak XV, True Ventures and Goodwater (April 2026); before that, the founders carried ~$15K each in credit-card debt.

How it started

After their previous apps' cash ran out, Daniel Dhawan and Levan Kvirkvelia spent months building a web vibe-coder. When Lovable launched and went viral, their prototype wasn't ready, so Kvirkvelia pushed a pivot to mobile apps. They launched Rork on February 12, 2025 — the same day rival Bolt shipped its own mobile product — broke and paying for AI out of pocket.

What happened

On February 24, 2025 HyperWrite CEO Matt Shumer tweeted that Rork blew Bolt out of the water; the post drew over a million views. Austen Allred invested $100K within 15 minutes, $350K landed on day one, and a $2.8M seed led by a16z Speedrun followed. Two months later the two-person team was at $550K ARR. Rork Max launched in February 2026, hit Product Hunt's monthly #1 with 1,246 upvotes, doubled annual revenue within weeks and led to a $15M seed and the acquisition of Paperline.

How it ended up

Still scaling: Rork Max ranks among top developer tools on the App Store and is a top referral source to RevenueCat; the company raised $15M in April 2026 and is acquiring to extend native Swift coverage.

Background

Rork is an AI platform that builds and ships native mobile apps from a text prompt: describe an app and it produces Swift, React Native or Expo code you can publish to the App Store and Google Play. Its Rork Max product extends that to iPhone, iPad, Watch, TV and Vision Pro, positioning itself as a web-based Xcode replacement.

The bet started as a rescue. Founders Daniel Dhawan and Levan Kvirkvelia — both veteran mobile developers in their 20s — had burned through their savings building a web vibe-coder. When Lovable launched and went viral in early 2025, they pivoted to mobile, where no one had built a good 'prompt to native app' product. They launched Rork on February 12, 2025, broke and financing AI inference on credit cards.

Two weeks later a viral tweet from HyperWrite CEO Matt Shumer comparing Rork favorably to Bolt brought a million views: $100K from Austen Allred within 15 minutes, $350K on day one, a $2.8M seed led by a16z Speedrun, and $550K ARR within two months. Rork Max then hit Product Hunt's February 2026 monthly #1 (1,246 upvotes) and led to a $15M seed in April 2026, with the company doubling annual revenue within weeks of the launch.

What has to be true

  • The founders chose the hardest segment of the hottest category — native mobile over web — where real competitors were fewer and the moat was deeper.
  • Speed was the strategy: launching the same day as Bolt's mobile product meant Rork was in the conversation at the exact moment the category went viral.
  • Public, specific product evidence (the viral demo video) converted an investor into a public advocate, which outsourced distribution to X.
  • Tiny team and low burn meant the company survived the pre-viral months and could move instantly when attention arrived.

What can be applied

Pick the harder, less crowded version of a hot category and make speed your only edge: Rork won because mobile was 10x harder than web, not despite it.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-02 Rork is scaling: Rork Max is live on the web, ranks among top developer tools in the App Store globally and has become a leading referral source to RevenueCat. The April 2026 $15M seed (Left Lane Capital, with Peak XV, True Ventures, Goodwater and a16z Speedrun) funded its first acquisition — Paperline, a macOS app for AI-built native Swift apps — extending Rork toward full native coverage beyond Expo and React Native.
