K-12 online learning platform in Indonesia — lessons, live classes, tutoring — plus adult upskilling (Skill Academy) and offline learning centers.

That tens of millions of Indonesian students would study through a phone app once online learning became the default — and that parents would pay for it.

US$150M Series C led by General Atlantic with GGV Capital, EV Growth and UOB Venture Management (Dec 2019); US$55M extension led by Tiger Global (mid-2021).

Founded in April 2014 by Belva Devara and Iman Usman as a marketplace for finding private tutors online, with East Ventures among its first investors; it grew into a full K-12 study app.

The US$150M Series C (Dec 2019, General Atlantic + GGV, EV Growth, UOB Venture) funded the app plus regional clones: KienGuru in Vietnam (2019) and StartDee in Thailand (2020). COVID school closures pushed users to 22 million in 2020; 2021 revenue reached US$102.6M (from ~US$63M) and the company booked its first profit, US$3.7M, alongside a US$55M Tiger Global extension. It had hired for the spike; in late 2022 it cut hundreds of staff and pivoted to hybrid learning built on 100+ offline learning centers.

Still running, on its own terms: first profit in 2021, hundreds laid off in late 2022, then hybrid expansion — acquiring Vietnam's Mclass (2023) and launching a five-year UOB program for 90,000 students (2025).

Edtech demand in emerging markets is event-driven: it peaked with school closures and fell with them, so capacity has to be planned for the fade, not the spike.

Owning the student relationship beats owning the content: Ruangguru moved from tutor marketplace to full app and captured the scale itself.

Hybrid is a moat in trust-sensitive markets: parents who hesitate to pay for an app will pay for a physical center with a known brand on it.

Reaching profitability in 2021, before the funding winter, is why Ruangguru could cut and pivot on its own timetable rather than collapse like some peers.

The demand spike that wins a pandemic also breaks the org chart: Ruangguru surged to 22M users, hired too fast, then cut hundreds. Going hybrid admits pure-online doesn't survive the fade alone.

As of August 2025 Ruangguru runs a hybrid model: the app plus 100+ offline learning centers across Indonesian cities, Skill Academy for upskilling, and regional bets — KienGuru and Mclass in Vietnam, StartDee in Thailand. The last disclosed raise is the mid-2021 Tiger Global extension (US$129M bank cash in December 2021); no newer financials. Its newest lever is institutional: the five-year UOB partnership launched August 2025, covering 500 schools a year in 60 cities. Belva Devara remains CEO; DailySocial reported in 2022 that its valuation was nearing unicorn territory.
