Runway: from AI video to world models, $315M at a $5.3B valuation

The maker of Gen-4.5 raised $315M at $5.3B to bet its next act is world models, then Lionsgate took an equity stake to build AI franchises.

Runway AI

The betThat world models, not video clips, are AI's next platform: Runway's media lead plus $315M can win robotics, gaming and medicine before rivals do.Scaling

What the business is

Runway builds AI models and tools for generating and editing video — including Gen-4.5, its latest video model — and is now expanding into world models, AI systems that build internal representations of an environment to predict physics and plan. Founded in New York in 2018, the roughly 140-person company sells to media, entertainment and advertising customers, with adoption growing in gaming and robotics.

Starting capital$315M Series E (announced 2026-02-10) led by General Atlantic, with Nvidia, Adobe Ventures, AllianceBernstein, AMD Ventures, Fidelity, Mirae Asset, Felicis, Premji Invest and others; Lionsgate's June 2026 equity stake was not a cash investment.

How it started

Runway was founded in New York in 2018 and focused on video generation from its Gen-1 video-to-video model in 2023, building a customer base across media, entertainment and advertising. It signed a partnership with Lionsgate in September 2024 covering pre-visualization, storyboarding and post-production, then pushed through successive models toward Gen-4.5.

What happened

In December 2025 Runway released GWM-1, its first general world model for interactive environments, robotics and digital avatars. On February 10, 2026 it announced a $315M Series E at a $5.3B valuation led by General Atlantic with Nvidia, Adobe Ventures, AMD Ventures and Fidelity, to pre-train the next generation of world models and expand its 140-person team; TechCrunch also reported a CoreWeave compute deal. On June 11, 2026 Lionsgate expanded the 2024 partnership into an equity stake plus a joint development program to create new AI-generated IP and short-form series.

How it ended up

Still scaling: as of June 2026 Runway runs Gen-4.5 in production, holds a $5.3B valuation from its February Series E, and has Lionsgate as an equity-linked studio partner building AI-driven franchises — with world models aimed at medicine, climate, energy and robotics still unproven at scale.

Background

Runway was founded in New York in 2018 and built its name on AI video: from the Gen-1 video-to-video model in 2023 to Gen-4.5, which TechCrunch says outperformed Google's and OpenAI's video models on several benchmarks. Its customers were professional media, entertainment and advertising teams — Lionsgate signed in September 2024, and Adobe became a partner.

In December 2025 Runway shipped GWM-1, its first general world model for interactive environments, robotics and digital avatars. On February 10, 2026 it announced a $315M Series E at a $5.3B valuation led by General Atlantic, with Nvidia, Adobe Ventures, AMD Ventures and Fidelity participating, to pre-train next-generation world models — a deliberate re-bet from video generation toward AI that can simulate and plan the physical world.

On June 11, 2026 Lionsgate expanded its partnership into a non-cash equity stake and a joint development program to create new AI-generated intellectual property and short-form series. Runway still faces Fei-Fei Li's World Labs, Google DeepMind and Nvidia's Cosmos, and world models for medicine, climate and robotics remain unproven — but the company had converted studio credibility and capital into a seat in the race.

What has to be true

  • Video was the demonstration, not the destination: world models trained on the same physics-aware video data can plan and simulate for robotics and enterprise.
  • Credibility with studios became a wedge into physical industries: Lionsgate and Adobe partners showed serious buyers, not just consumers, trust the models.
  • Capital density decides: $315M from General Atlantic, Nvidia, AMD and Adobe Ventures funds the compute and researchers a world-model pretraining race demands.

What can be applied

When your market leader is a feature in someone else's race, re-bet on the harder thing: Runway used its Hollywood credibility and capital to chase world models instead of defending video clips.

Aftermath

As of June 2026 Runway's Gen-4.5 video model was shipping with native audio and long-form, multi-shot generation, and the company was spending its $315M Series E on pre-training next-generation world models and expanding research and go-to-market teams. Lionsgate had taken a non-cash equity stake and agreed to a joint development program creating new IP and AI short-form series, extending the September 2024 partnership. Adoption was growing in gaming and robotics, and a CoreWeave compute deal backed the expansion; rivals now include Fei-Fei Li's World Labs, Google DeepMind and Nvidia's Cosmos.
