What the business is
Sage sells accounting, HR and payroll technology to small and mid-sized businesses; WholeHelp is a French AI company behind the AI Studio application and workflow platform.
The bet
SMB software's next layer is AI-native apps and agent workflows built on the accounting products customers already run, not bespoke development.
How it started
Founded in France as a technical digital agency, WholeHelp bet on one product: AI Studio, which turns natural-language business requirements into working web applications and agent-run workflows.
What happened
Built as a Sage technology partner, AI Studio went from the first line of code to live customers in under a year, according to co-founder and CEO Valentin Barthel. In June 2026 it launched as the platform behind Sage 100 Experience Edition, sold by Sage in France. Its AI Builder module converts plain-language requirements into lightweight web apps such as role-based dashboards; the Workflow module uses AI agents to automate processes across and beyond Sage products; a Chat platform gives conversational access to information and processes.
How it ended up
Acquired by Sage, announced 5 October 2026. No immediate change for existing customers and partners; Sage says it will invest further and extend the capability across more Sage products and geographies.
What has to be true
Sage bought a product its customers were already running, not a prototype — the June 2026 edition launch de-risked the acquisition.
WholeHelp's agency-to-AI-startup path shows a wedge: build as the incumbent's partner until the platform becomes load-bearing.
The deal targets a concrete SMB pain — custom development cost and time — with AI-native application building inside familiar compliance-heavy software.
What can be applied
Build inside a giant's ecosystem until your product becomes load-bearing: the partner whose software already runs the incumbent's customer workflows is the easiest acquisition either side can justify.
Aftermath
As of 5 October 2026, the product and services continue unchanged, existing contacts and automations stay in place, and Sage says it intends to keep investing and integrate AI Studio more closely into its ecosystem beyond France.
