Screen Studio's bet: automate video polish, bootstrapped past $1M a year

Adam Pietrasiak built Screen Studio solo from a viral demo tweet to thousands of paying users and over $1M a year, with no VC funding

Screen Studio

The betThat creators would pay for software automating an editor's taste, not just tasks: smooth zooms, cursor motion and cinematic polish, built solo with no fundingLive

What the business is

Screen Studio is a macOS app that records the screen and automatically produces polished, professional-looking videos: it smooths mouse movement, zooms to the cursor, overlays keystrokes and applies cinematic motion presets, replacing the manual editing that tools like Camtasia or Premiere require.

Starting capitalBootstrapped with no outside funding; revenue from paying customers covered development from the first month.

How it started

After his previous startup, Timpler, failed after years of work, Adam Pietrasiak set constraints for his next product: a simple solution to an obvious problem, immediate revenue, an MVP buildable in months, and no outside funding. The idea came from noticing Stripe's Twitter feed full of polished screen recordings and asking how much of that editing could be automated without losing quality; a personal library of reusable code built across earlier projects gave him a fast head start.

What happened

Pietrasiak built in public from about 70 Twitter followers and posted a demo video made with the unfinished product; when Linear's CEO liked the tweet, his following jumped to about 2,000 within days and early buyers paid before launch. Screen Studio shipped at the end of 2022, made about $30K in its first month with 30 sales in three days, and grew through product-led virality: every polished video made with the app prompted how-did-you-make-that questions, which a 15% affiliate program turned into systematic word of mouth.

How it ended up

Still bootstrapped and independent: by September 2025 Screen Studio was generating over $1M a year, selling over 1,000 licenses monthly with roughly 80% retention, and Pietrasiak said he had no plans to take VC funding.

Background

Screen Studio is a macOS app that records screens and automatically turns raw captures into polished videos, applying smooth cursor motion, zoom, keystroke overlays and cinematic presets. Adam Pietrasiak, a designer-developer from Poland, built it after his previous startup Timpler failed, setting strict constraints: obvious problem, immediate revenue, short build time, no outside funding.

The idea came from watching Stripe's Twitter feed full of professionally made screen recordings and asking how much of that editing could be automated without losing quality. Pietrasiak built in public from about 70 followers, then posted a demo video made with the unfinished product; when Linear's CEO liked it, his following grew to about 2,000 within days and customers paid before the product was ready.

Screen Studio launched at the end of 2022, made about $30K in its first month on 30 sales in its first three days, and compounded through word of mouth as every polished video advertised the tool. By September 2025 it was generating over $1M a year with more than 1,000 licenses sold monthly and an 80% retention rate, still with no VC funding.

What has to be true

  • The target users, developers and marketers, already had to make product videos and hated editing them, so demand was obvious and immediate
  • Encoding an editor's aesthetic decisions into automation made the product hard to copy even though individual features were simple
  • A demo video made with the product itself was the sharpest possible marketing asset and triggered the initial viral jump
  • Charging from day one with no freemium tier forced the company to prove value and kept it independent of investor timelines

What can be applied

Sell the craft, not the tool: Screen Studio automated the taste of a video editor, let its own output do the marketing, and stayed deliberately small and funding-free

Aftermath

As of September 2025 Screen Studio remains a bootstrapped, independent company run by Pietrasiak and a small team, generating over $1M a year from more than 1,000 monthly license sales with an 80% retention rate. Hybrid pricing mixes one-time licenses with subscriptions and no free tier, plus a 15% affiliate program; it competes with funded tools like Loom and Camtasia in the professional-polish niche. Pietrasiak says he does not plan to raise venture capital, framing direct customer revenue and deliberate constraints as advantages a funding-driven growth race would erode.
