Series: Yale duo's $5.1M bet that AI social networking lives inside iMessage

Two Yale students raised $5.1M for Series, an AI matchmaker inside iMessage: text a number, swipe ten-photo shares, chat privately.

What the business is

An AI-powered social networking platform that runs entirely inside iMessage: users text a phone number, describe who they want to meet, and swipe through 10-photo "shares" to start private chats.

Starting capital$5.1M pre-seed announced April 2026, with Venmo co-founder Iqram Magdon-Ismail, Pear VC, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman and GPTZero founder Edward Tian as investors

How it started

Johnson (CS and economics) and Hargrow (neuroscience) met as freshmen in the Yale Entrepreneurial Society, interviewing founders about building businesses; they incorporated a company in their freshman summer around "AI as a warm-connection facilitator", iterated for about a year, landed on Series, and began fundraising in March 2025.

What happened

The founders built a team of eight and opened the platform beyond its college base to Gen Z and professionals, with business introductions the most common use. Marketing was deliberately unorthodox: a trailer shot the night before launch went viral on LinkedIn, and the duo staged a live Twitch reality show, "The Series", in August 2025. In April 2026 they announced the $5.1M pre-seed, with the money earmarked for engineers and product expansion from an office in Chelsea, New York.

How it ended up

Still live and scaling: Series reports students on more than 750 campuses, 82% Day-30 retention for activated users, and expansion to Gen Z and professionals; both founders remain in school rather than dropping out.

Background

Series is a social networking platform that lives entirely inside iMessage. Users text a phone number (Series AI), say who they are and who they want to meet, and receive "shares" — a carousel of ten photo cards from other users with matching asks. Pressing and holding a card opens a private conversation in the same thread, so neither party's personal number is exposed.

The bet is that conversation, not the feed, is the next interface for social networking. Founders Nathaneo Johnson and Sean Hargrow met as freshmen at the Yale Entrepreneurial Society, incorporated a company around "AI as a warm-connection facilitator" during their freshman summer, iterated on concepts for about a year, and began fundraising in March 2025.

In April 2026 the duo announced a $5.1 million pre-seed with Venmo co-founder Iqram Magdon-Ismail, Pear VC, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman and GPTZero founder Edward Tian. The eight-person team works from Chelsea, New York, and plans to stay on the East Coast. Attention was treated as a product: a trailer filmed the night before launch went viral on LinkedIn, and the pair streamed a live Twitch reality show, "The Series", in August 2025.

As of the April 2026 announcement, founders report students using Series across more than 750 campuses and 82% Day-30 retention among activated users — above early Facebook's benchmark, they say — with the platform opened beyond college to Gen Z and professionals. Business introductions dominate usage, with some dating and friendship use. Johnson and Hargrow, still seniors, chose not to drop out.

What has to be true

  • The hardest step for a new social network is the install-and-new-habit step; embedding the product in iMessage removes it — users text a number instead of downloading an app.
  • AI agents can run double-opt-in introductions at a scale a human concierge cannot, and hosting chats inside the Series thread protects both parties' phone numbers.
  • Campus-first, warm-network distribution mirrors early Facebook, letting the founders grow without buying ads.
  • The founders treated attention as a product: a viral LinkedIn trailer and a Twitch reality show brought investors to them before the product had to prove it.

What can be applied

To beat an incumbent distribution habit, don't build a better version of the same surface — find the channel your users already live in and make the product disappear into it.

Aftermath

As of April 24, 2026, Series is live and scaling: students across more than 750 campuses, an 82% Day-30 retention claim for activated users, and an expanded focus on Gen Z and professionals, with business introductions the most common use case. The $5.1M pre-seed is earmarked for engineering hires and product expansion out of an office in Chelsea, New York. Both founders remain Yale seniors — deliberately not dropping out — and the company is positioned as a challenger to LinkedIn and Instagram for the next generation of professional networking.
