Shift Up (시프트업) bets on a PS5 blockbuster; Stellar Blade hits 3M sales, IPO jumps 49%

A mobile-gacha studio staked its future on a PS5-exclusive action game; Stellar Blade sold 1M+ in two months and Shift Up went public in Seoul.

Shift Up (시프트업)

The betThat a Korean gacha studio could win premium consoles with a PS5-exclusive action game, trusting Sony's platform and global players over its own mobile strength.Scaling

What the business is

Developer of Stellar Blade, a PS5-exclusive action game launched April 2024, and Goddess of Victory: Nikke, a free-to-play mobile gacha hit from 2022.

How it started

Kim Hyung-tae, the illustrator behind Blade & Soul, founded Shift Up in 2013; the studio spent years on mobile and contract work before Goddess of Victory: Nikke launched in 2022 and became a top-grossing gacha game in Korea, Japan and Taiwan.

What happened

Stellar Blade launched as a PS5 exclusive on 2024-04-26, became the best-selling game in the US for April and topped PlayStation stores in eight countries, selling over 1M copies in two months. Shift Up then went public on the KOSPI on 2024-07-11 at ₩60,000 per share, raising ₩435B (~$316M) with institutional demand 226x oversubscribed; shares spiked 49% intraday and closed +18%.

How it ended up

Still running and expanding; the PC version launched June 2025 sold 1M+ copies in three days, pushing lifetime sales past 3M, and a sequel was confirmed for release before 2027.

Background

Shift Up is a South Korean game developer founded in 2013 by illustrator Kim Hyung-tae, creator of Blade & Soul. The studio made its name with Goddess of Victory: Nikke, a free-to-play mobile gacha game launched in 2022 that became top-grossing in Korea, Japan and Taiwan, and posted ₩168.6B revenue (+155% YoY) and ₩111B operating profit in 2023.

The bet was that the same art-driven style could win the premium console market. Shift Up built Stellar Blade, a PS5-exclusive action game published with Sony, launched 2024-04-26; it became April's best-selling game in the US, topped PlayStation stores in eight countries, and sold over one million copies within two months.

The console bet paid off commercially and in the markets: Shift Up IPO'd on the KOSPI on 2024-07-11 at ₩60,000 per share, raising ₩435B (~$316M) at a ₩3.48T enterprise value, with institutional demand 226x oversubscribed and retail 341x; shares spiked 49% intraday and closed 18% higher.

Since then the game has kept compounding: the PC version launched June 2025 sold 1M+ copies in three days (192,078 peak Steam concurrents), pushing lifetime sales past 3M, and Shift Up confirmed a sequel in a May 2025 investor presentation. The company is also expanding its own publishing beyond Sony exclusivity.

What has to be true

  • The bet was contrarian in Korea, where studios chased mobile and PC online games; a premium, single-player PS5 exclusive looked like a sidestep.
  • Funding the console gamble with Nikke's cash flow meant Shift Up never had to trade away creative control for development money.
  • Sony's publishing and platform reach gave a mid-size Korean studio instant global distribution in the US, UK and Japan.
  • The results validated the thesis: a 49% intraday debut gain, 3M+ lifetime sales and a sequel greenlit before 2027.

What can be applied

Profit from one platform can fund a bet on another: Nikke's gacha revenue bankrolled a premium console game, and the hit showed a mobile studio can go global without abandoning its identity.

Aftermath

As of 2025-11-24, Stellar Blade has sold over 3M copies across PS5 and PC; the PC edition sold 1M+ in three days with a 192,078 peak concurrent player count on Steam and 98% positive user reviews, which Shift Up called the best-selling PlayStation-exclusive launch IP in history on PC. The company confirmed a sequel (planned before 2027) in a May 2025 investor presentation and is moving toward self-publishing its next titles, reducing dependence on Sony exclusivity. Tencent held about 40.1% of Shift Up as its second-largest shareholder ahead of the IPO.
