What the business is
Marketplace for independent music events: discovery for fans, data-boosted ticketing for producers, fan tools for artists — about a 10% commission on each transaction.
The bet
The underground scene Fnac and Ticketmaster ignore can be the wedge into a top-five French ticketing marketplace — run independently while KKR consolidates the rest.
Starting capital
€2M raised in February 2020 (Maddyness); since then founders say they declined acquisition approaches to stay independent.
How it started
In 2015 the underground electronic scene resurfaced in Paris, with collectives organizing parties outside the established circuit. Romain Dugier, Tristan Le Corre and Lucas Gérard built an app that referenced those nights for the people who wanted to find them.
What happened
The app became a marketplace serving producers, artists and fans: 5,000 active producers, 500,000 artists, 7 million users, roughly €200M in business volume and 80% annual growth, profitable since 2024. As KKR-backed Superstruct rolled up festivals and venues, Shotgun says it declined buyout approaches.
How it ended up
Still independent, expanding to the UK, Germany and Spain, and sitting at #9 free in France as of September 2026.
What has to be true
The incumbents structurally underserved small collectives — no box office wants a 200-cap warehouse party — so Shotgun faced no competition where it seeded itself.
Owning discovery for a scene gives the marketplace its supply first: producers came for the audience, fans came for the nights, and the 10% commission followed.
Behavioral data from electronic music showed cross-genre demand, letting Shotgun expand into hip-hop and live music without buying a new audience.
Declining buyouts kept the flywheel: in a consolidation wave, the last independent platform inherits promoters who fear conflicts of interest.
What can be applied
A dominant platform's blind spot is culture it finds too small to underwrite. Serve that scene, own its data and trust, and the niche marketplace grows outward on its own.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-20 the Shotgun app is #9 free overall in France with 26,000 ratings at 4.9 stars (Apple listing and charts feed). The company reports 7 million users, 5,000 producers, €200M in volume and profitability since 2024, and is opening the UK, Germany and Spain while remaining independent.
