What the business is
AI-powered contract lifecycle management software for legal and contract teams, with offices in the US, UK, Germany, France, Australia, India and Singapore
The bet
A sustainable cost structure matters more than keeping headcount, even right after raising $25M, if the company is to reach long-term profitable growth
Starting capital
About $170M raised in total, including an $85M Series D from Partners Group, Avatar Capital, Sequoia and Tiger Global plus a $25M extension from Brookfield Growth
How it started
SirionLabs was founded in 2012 by Ajay Agrawal, Kanti Prabha, Aditya Gupta and Claude Marais. It sells contract management for authoring, extraction, obligation management and renewals, and claims over 250 clients and 5 million contracts worth $450B under management.
What happened
On January 4, 2023 it announced $25M from Brookfield Growth, closing a $110M Series D. Late 2022 it had acquired Seattle-based contract automation firm Zendoc. On January 17 CEO Ajay Agrawal emailed staff about cutting 15% of the workforce across locations.
How it ended up
About 15% of staff, around 130 of over 900 employees on LinkedIn, were cut, across DevOps, analysts and support among others, with two months' salary as severance. A company spokesperson confirmed the cuts and said it was positioning for long-term profitable growth.
What has to be true
The macroeconomic environment pushed the company to prioritise profitability
A sustainable cost structure was needed to support long-term profitable growth
The cuts spanned India and other countries, hitting DevOps, analysts and support teams
A fresh funding round did not remove the need for cost discipline in 2023
What can be applied
Fresh capital did not stop a cost reset: SirionLabs treated profitability as the priority even within 15 days of closing its round.
Aftermath
As of 2023-01-25 SirionLabs had cut about 15% of staff, roughly 130 people, and said it was realigning resources toward profitable growth. The headcount basis is the LinkedIn figure of over 900 employees.
