Skyryse builds SkyOS, a fly-by-wire flight-operating system that strips mechanical controls and gauges out of aircraft, and sells Skyryse One, a modified Robinson R66 helicopter flown with a single stick and two touchscreens.

How it started
Skyryse was founded in 2016 and began building SkyOS, which automates takeoff and landing, fully automated hover, and engine-out emergency landings. In November 2023 the company completed what it called the world's first fully automated autorotation emergency landing procedure, the maneuver pilots use when the engine fails.

In 2024 Skyryse debuted Skyryse One at EAA AirVenture, earned an FAA special airworthiness certificate in October, and by early November said the $1.8M First Edition reservations had sold out in six months, with base reservations open at $2,500. In 2025 the FAA granted final design approval for the SkyOS flight computers; Skyryse had integration contracts with United Rotorcraft, Air Methods and Mitsubishi Corporation and was working on U.S. military Black Hawks. In February 2026 Skyryse announced a $300M+ Series C led by Autopilot Ventures at a $1.15B valuation, taking total equity above $605M, while formal flight testing for full certification was still ahead. The FAA published proposed special conditions for the R66's digital fly-by-wire system in April 2026 and adopted final special conditions in August 2026, effective September 11, 2026.
How it ended up
Still un-certified: as of August 2026 the FAA had just issued the special conditions that will govern the R66 fly-by-wire modification, so the supplemental type certificate, full production and commercial deliveries still lay ahead nearly a decade after founding.

Skyryse is an El Segundo, California aviation-automation startup founded in 2016. Its bet is that software-defined flight controls, not mechanical linkages, can make flying - especially helicopters - dramatically safer and simpler. Its SkyOS flight-operating system replaces dozens of controls and gauges with redundant flight computers and two touchscreens, and Skyryse One is a Robinson R66 flown with a single control stick instead of cyclic, collective and pedals.
The milestones came steadily: the world's first fully automated autorotation emergency landing in November 2023, an EAA AirVenture debut and an FAA special airworthiness certificate in 2024, and a sell-out of the $1.8M First Edition reservations within six months. Certification is the long pole: the R66's airworthiness rules date from 1964 and assume mechanical feedback, so the FAA had to invent digital flight-control standards. Skyryse applied for its supplemental type certificate in April 2023, the FAA proposed special conditions in April 2026, and adopted them finally in August 2026, effective September 11, 2026. Formal flight testing and verification were still ahead, leaving the company a unicorn valued on an un-certified product.
What has to be true
- SkyOS targets the highest-risk, skill-dependent maneuvers - hover and engine-out autorotation - by automating them, rather than trying to replace the pilot.
- Certifying the hardest vehicle first (the R66 helicopter) was the wedge that proved SkyOS is aircraft-agnostic, which is what later opened Black Hawk and partner integrations.
