What the business is
A Delhi D2C flip-flop brand: mass-premium slip-ons priced ₹500–900 with proprietary materials like Superfoam, sold on marketplaces and its own site.
The bet
Comfort innovation — patented foam and soles — could build India's first branded flip-flop leader in a market of commodity hawai chappals.
How it started
Gaurav Chopra, an IIM-Tiruchirappalli alumnus, had spent more than a decade designing footwear for Bata's Hush Puppies, Puma and United Colors of Benetton before teaming with Sumant Kakaria, Vikram Iyer and Aprajit Kathuria to launch Solethreads in November 2018 — bootstrapping the R&D themselves in a market where three-quarters of production was unorganised.
What happened
The startup developed patented material technology — Superfoam, a processed rubber with a memory-foam feel used in more than half its products, plus TruBounce cushioning, Recliner high-consistency rubber and the Everlast skid-resistant outsole — and set up two sheet-extrusion plants near Delhi and Jaipur. Launched just before COVID, it hired and trained remotely through lockdowns; customer feedback about heel pain led to research on flat feet and arch support added to the soles.
What has to be true
The category logic was sound: the world's largest footwear category by volume, in the world's second-largest producer, with no dominant brand.
Materials patents gave the brand a defensible story in a market where competitors competed on price alone.
The founders came from exactly the incumbent design benches — Hush Puppies, Puma, Benetton — whose mass-production habits had left the space dull.
Customer feedback loops turned product defects into features: heel-pain complaints produced the arch-support line and instant approval.
What can be applied
In a commodity category, the patent is the brand: a materially better footbed gives buyers a reason a chappal has a name.
Aftermath
As of October 2021 Solethreads claimed 30% of sales through its own website and was wiring up D2C enablers — MoEngage for engagement, Unicommerce and Vinculum for inventory, Paxcom for analytics, Pickrr and ClickPost for logistics — while spending the April 2021 Series A on brand-building toward its FY22 targets.
