Stilta bets AI agents replace manual prior-art review; $10.5M a16z seed, Roche onboard
Stockholm's Stilta builds 'Cursor for patent practitioners' — agents that scan 180M patents in minutes; $10.5M seed led by a16z, customers Roche and Maersk.
Stilta
What the business is
Stilta is a Stockholm-based agentic AI platform for patent enforcement, defense and commercialization: patent practitioners give it a patent number and its agents return traceable prior-art analysis and litigation-grade reports in minutes.
Starting capital:$10.5M seed led by Andreessen Horowitz (May 2026), with participation from founders and executives of Y Combinator, OpenAI, Sana, Legora, Lovable and Listen Labs.
How it started
Four engineers who met at McKinsey/QuantumBlack founded Stilta in Stockholm in December 2025. Led by Oskar Block — who bootstrapped two startups past $1M ARR while at McKinsey and Goldman Sachs — the team had spent years deploying AI for large organizations and saw patent research as one of the biggest gaps between available tools and what professionals actually need. They joined Y Combinator's Winter 2026 cohort and launched the product in February 2026.
What happened
The product went live in February 2026 and quickly signed Roche, Alfa Laval and Maersk along with top IP law firms. TechCrunch's W26 investor survey flagged Stilta as a favorite, helped by a Swedish-founder halo from Lovable and Legora. In May 2026 Stilta raised a $10.5M seed led by a16z with participation from OpenAI and YC backers, and in July 2026 launched publicly on YC's Launch platform as 'Cursor for patent practitioners'.
How it ended up
Still scaling: as of September 2026 Stilta is live with leading US and European IP firms and remains focused on prior-art, invalidation and infringement workflows for both law firms and corporate legal teams.
Background
Stilta is a Stockholm-based startup building agentic AI for patent work, founded in December 2025 by four former McKinsey/QuantumBlack engineers. Its bet is that deep patent research — the hundreds of hours of prior-art searching that make disputes cost up to $4M per case — can be run by fleets of specialized AI agents instead of human associates.
The product, live since February 2026, takes a patent number and deploys agents across 180 million patents, 250 million scientific publications and over a trillion archived web pages, returning organized, evidence-linked prior-art claims within minutes. TechCrunch's Winter 2026 Demo Day investor survey named Stilta one of the batch's eight favorites, noting that IP lawyers at Roche were already using its agents.
In May 2026 Stilta raised a $10.5M seed led by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from founders and executives of Y Combinator, OpenAI, Sana, Legora, Lovable and Listen Labs. Clients at launch included Roche, Alfa Laval and Maersk, and the team positioned the product as 'Cursor for patent practitioners' when it launched publicly on YC's Launch platform in July 2026.
As of September 2026 Stilta says it is live with leading law firms in both Europe and the US, targeting prior-art, invalidation and infringement workflows. All customer and coverage figures are company-reported or drawn from the funding announcement coverage.
What has to be true
- Prior-art search is the most labor-intensive, highest-stakes hour in patent litigation, so automation there has immediate, measurable value.
- A fleet of specialized agents with traceable evidence answers the profession's core non-negotiable: outputs must cite specific references.
- Data coverage at the scale of 180M patents and 1T+ web archives creates switching costs that a generic legal AI tool cannot match.
- The McKinsey/QuantumBlack pedigree and a Swedish-founder halo helped land YC, a16z and OpenAI backers within months of founding.
What can be applied
Pick the most expensive manual hour in a profession and automate it end to end with evidence-linked agents; the moat is data coverage plus traceability, not generic LLM text generation.
Aftermath
As of September 2026 Stilta continues to scale from Stockholm: its seed round closed in May 2026 led by a16z, it launched publicly on YC's Launch platform in July 2026, and it reports being live with leading IP firms in Europe and the US. The company remains focused on patent enforcement, defense and commercialization workflows — prior-art, invalidation and infringement analysis — for both law firms and corporate legal departments. Growth and revenue figures beyond named customers are not public.
