How it started
The BCI was developed by neurologist Thomas Oxley and biomedical engineer Nicholas Opie starting in 2011, spun out of the University of Melbourne in 2012, and moved its headquarters to Brooklyn in 2016 (Forbes Australia). First human implants followed by 2019 — about five years ahead of Neuralink's.
What happened
Synchron has implanted Stentrode in ten patients with paralysis across US and Australian trials under an FDA investigational device exemption (MacRumors; Healio). In 2024 COMMAND participant Mark first controlled an Apple Vision Pro by thought; in August 2025 Synchron showed him driving an iPad natively through Apple's BCI-HID protocol — the first public thought-controlled iPad (MacRumors). The November 2025 Series D, including A$54M from Australia's National Reconstruction Fund, funds pivotal trials, manufacturing scale-up, and a next-generation whole-brain interface promised for late 2026 (Forbes Australia; Healio).

Background
Synchron was spun out of the University of Melbourne in 2012 to prove a counter-intuitive bet: a brain-computer interface does not need to open the skull. Its Stentrode — a self-expanding electrode mesh threaded through the jugular vein to sit in a blood vessel over the motor cortex — records motor-intent signals so people with paralysis can control digital devices by thought.
The bet showed early results. Human implants began by 2019, and by August 2025 Stentrode had been placed in ten patients with paralysis in US and Australian trials under an FDA investigational device exemption. In 2024 a COMMAND participant named Mark controlled an Apple Vision Pro; in August 2025 he demonstrated the first public thought-controlled iPad using Apple's BCI-HID protocol, with no touch, voice or eye tracking.

Synchron frames Stentrode for people with severe paralysis — such as ALS, spinal cord injury or stroke — who retain motor intent, aiming to restore digital independence without invasive surgery. Commercial launch still depends on pivotal-trial results and regulatory approval.

A next-generation, catheter-delivered whole-brain interface is promised for late 2026. No commercial product has launched yet; regulatory approval and pivotal-trial data remain the gate.
