What the business is
Biotech company running an automated, robot-tended brain-organoid platform to find new drug targets for neurological and psychiatric disorders.
The bet
That growing patient brain organoids at robotic scale and mining the resulting data yields drug targets traditional discovery can't reach.
How it started
Co-founders Sean Escola (then an assistant professor of psychiatry at Columbia) and Saul Kato (then an assistant professor of neurology at UC San Francisco) built a system to grow "organoids" — self-organized 3D tissue cultures derived from stem cells taken from patients with brain disease. Rather than discovering how to create the organoids themselves, they built automation around scaling their production, monitoring growth with robots, and collecting large volumes of data on how diseased samples differ from healthy ones.
What happened
System1 raised a $25 million Series A co-led by CRV and Pfizer Ventures, bringing its total funding to $30 million, with CRV's George Zachary and Pfizer's Margi McLoughlin joining the board and CRV's Dylan Morris and Pfizer's Laszlo Kiss joining as board observers. CEO Sean Escola said the round let the company apply its phenotypic-screening platform "at the scale needed to identify new drugs" for epilepsy, autism and schizophrenia. A prior Wall Street Journal profile described the company as having built "a novel system around scaling production" of organoids rather than inventing the underlying organoid science.
What has to be true
A pharma strategic investor (Pfizer Ventures) co-leading the round is a specific, harder-to-fake signal that the underlying science and automation platform held up to industry scrutiny.
Targeting three well-defined indications rather than claiming a general platform play gave investors a concrete way to evaluate near-term output.
The founders' academic credibility in exactly this disease area (psychiatry, neurology) reduced the risk that the bet was built on hype rather than domain expertise.
What can be applied
Betting that automating and scaling an existing technique, not inventing new science, was itself the defensible product attracted both a specialist VC and a pharma investor.
Aftermath
As of the September 2018 raise, System1 was using the $25M Series A to scale its automated organoid platform and run drug-discovery programs targeting epilepsy, autism and schizophrenia.
