Tailscale raises $160M Series C betting identity-first networking wins

Zero-config mesh-VPN maker Tailscale raised $160M (US) led by Accel in April 2025, betting identity rather than IP addresses becomes networking's core.

The betConnections named by people and apps, not IPs, will become the internet's secure standard layer — so Tailscale raised $160M to define it first.Scaling

What the business is

Tailscale sells zero-config secure networking: laptops, homelabs, apps and AI workloads across clouds connect to each other without NAT traversal or VPN configuration, with identity rather than IP addresses at the core.

How it started

Tailscale was founded in 2019, and the founders "weren't even sure" they wanted venture backing. The motive, as the Series C post recalls, was to fix networking by making it disappear: cut the time anyone spends on NAT traversal or VPN configuration, and let devices, apps and teammates connect securely and privately.

What happened

Six years later the company reports millions of daily users and business customers that doubled from 5,000 to 10,000 in ten months (2025-01-14), from homelabs and Minecraft servers to AI labs — Perplexity, Mistral, Cohere, Groq, Hugging Face — and enterprises such as Instacart, SAP, Telus, Motorola and Duolingo. On 2025-04-08 Tailscale announced a US$160M (CA$230M) Series C led by Accel's Amit Kumar, who also led the Series A, with CRV, Insight Partners, Heavybit and Uncork Capital, plus angels George Kurtz (CrowdStrike CEO) and Anthony Casalena (Squarespace CEO). The post calls venture money "a tool": already on a long runway, the company wanted speed — removing friction, scaling the network without complexity, and making identity, not IP addresses, the core of secure connectivity.

No ending yet — it is still running.

Background

Tailscale is a secure-networking company whose product makes connections just work: laptops, homelabs, applications and AI workloads running across clouds reach each other without NAT traversal or VPN configuration. The Series C post recalls that the founders, who started in 2019 and "weren't even sure" they wanted venture backing, wanted to make networking disappear — and that six years on, millions of people rely on Tailscale every day.

The company's bet is identity-first networking: the internet was built for location, so everything that followed — VPNs, firewalls, zero trust — patches an original gap, while Tailscale connects you to your app, teammate or service by identity wherever it runs. To go faster on that thesis, it raised US$160M (CA$230M) on 2025-04-08, led by Accel with CRV, Insight Partners, Heavybit and Uncork Capital, plus angels George Kurtz (CrowdStrike CEO) and Anthony Casalena (Squarespace CEO).

By then the company had 10,000 business customers (up from 5,000 in ten months, as of 2025-01-14) and named AI labs Perplexity, Mistral, Cohere, Groq and Hugging Face plus Instacart, SAP, Telus, Motorola and Duolingo as customers. The announcement reached the Hacker News front page on 2025-04-08 with 659 points and 332 comments, where the debate turned on open-source rivals such as Netbird and Headscale and how much of Tailscale's own coordination backend is truly open.

What has to be true

  • Measurable business, not a claim: millions of daily users, 10,000 business customers as of 2025-01-14, and named customers from AI labs to Fortune 500s.
  • The bet is explicit and the round is the wager: identity-first networking is stated as the thesis, and $160M is the money spent to define the standard.
  • Concrete public attention: HN front page on 2025-04-08 with 659 points and 332 comments, verifiable at item 43620141.
  • The timing story is instructive: the AI infrastructure build-out — GPUs across clouds, workloads across continents — is presented as the moment that made the identity layer load-bearing.

What can be applied

Raise when the market suddenly moves toward your thesis: the AI build-out made cross-cloud networking urgent, and capital buys the chance to set the standard before rivals do.

Aftermath

As of 2025-04-08 Tailscale remained private and scaling: the round was earmarked for engineering and product growth, more markets, and two promises — free support for free customers and backward compatibility forever. The announcement frames the network as the right place for the security and identity layer, with the boundary shifting from datacenter to device to person. The HN thread read the raise against a crowded field of open-source alternatives, so whether identity-first networking becomes the standard layer was still open.
