How it started
Data scientist Rotem Weiss created GPT Researcher in 2023, before ChatGPT had internet access: an open-source agent that fetched real-time web data and wrote cited research reports. It went viral and approached 20,000 GitHub stars. When LLM vendors added web search to their chat products, Weiss pivoted the distribution into a business, founding Tavily in 2024 to sell the underlying search layer to enterprises running AI agents.

Tavily won developer mindshare as the search tool wired into LangChain, LlamaIndex, CrewAI and thousands of agent tutorials, then moved upmarket to enterprise customers. On 2026-02-10 Nebius agreed to acquire Tavily; Israeli media reported a base value of about $275M, rising to as much as $400M if performance targets were met. Nebius completed the acquisition and integrated agentic search into its AI Cloud, with Tavily continuing under its own brand.

Tavily sells a web-access layer for AI agents: a single API that searches, crawls and extracts structured data from the web in formats optimized for LLM and agent workflows. What has to be true
- GPT Researcher's ~20K stars proved thousands of developers already needed LLM-friendly web data, validating the wedge before any sales team existed.
- Being the default search tool in LangChain and agent tutorials made Tavily the obvious API for a generation of agent builders.
- Enterprise governance concerns — ungoverned agents browsing the open web — gave large companies a reason to buy a managed search layer instead of wiring LLMs directly.
- The Nebius deal showed that in an AI-stack consolidation wave, owning the real-time data layer made Tavily an acquisition target rather than a feature of someone else's product.
What can be applied
An open-source tool can be the cheapest possible validation of a bet: prove thousands of developers need the missing piece, then sell that piece as a product to the enterprises using it.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-02, Tavily operates under its own brand inside Nebius, which has folded agentic search into its AI Cloud alongside its Token Factory inference service; the GPT Researcher open-source project remains live and is used as the front door to Tavily. The company's stated challenge is competition from OpenAI and Perplexity's search offerings, as well as adjacent startups Exa and Firecrawl.
