Designs shipping-container-sized solar-to-gas plants (the Terraformer) that turn electricity, water and captured CO2 into pipeline-grade synthetic natural gas.

If solar keeps getting absurdly cheap, synthesizing hydrocarbons from air beats drilling for them — worthless land, no grid, fossil-fuel prices, gigaton scale.

Raised $26M to date by mid-2025, per an independent analysis of the company.

Casey Handmer, a physicist and prolific writer on energy abundance, published the Terraform Industries whitepaper in February 2022 arguing cheap solar flips hydrocarbon economics. The company, based in Burbank, California, built around that plan: a Terraformer is roughly two shipping containers pairing an electrolyzer, a proprietary direct air capture unit and a Sabatier reactor, sized for a 1 MW solar array.

In April 2024 the first Terraformer produced pipeline-grade synthetic natural gas end to end. The company reported hydrogen below $2.50/kg and CO2 captured below $250/ton — calling the latter a world record — and signed agreements to sell the gas to two unnamed utilities. A Master Plan post in October 2024 charted the same rig expanding into methanol, ethylene and gasoline by 2027–2028. In 2025 an independent engineering critique challenged the unit economics — the solar array, at roughly $736,000, costs over seven times the Terraformer's base price, and gas offtake alone may not repay the investment — while the company kept shipping ideas publicly, including direct-current data centers (HN, 66 points, January 2026).

All three subsystems — electrolysis, direct air capture, Sabatier — are century-old chemistry; the innovation is running them on intermittent DC solar power, where the cost collapse is.

First gas was not a lab demo: two gas utilities agreed to take the product, converting a climate claim into a receivable.

Distribution is pre-built — gas flows into existing pipelines and existing customers, so the company never has to create a market for its molecules.

The open critique shows where the model is fragile: the machine's economics silently assume the customer also buys and owns a million-dollar solar farm.

When an input gets 10x cheaper, the profitable move is often re-running a 19th-century process around its cost curve, not inventing new chemistry — if the math survives your own solar bill.

As of early 2026 Terraform is taking reservations for production Terraformers, has agreements with two utilities for its early gas volumes, and is publicly working adjacent products — standalone electrolyzers, liquid fuels, and direct-current data-center designs (its January 2026 post drew 66 points on HN). The unit-economics debate with independent analysts is ongoing, and the company had raised about $26M to date as of mid-2025.
