The Librarian: WhatsApp-first AI assistant raised $2M, then pivoted to real estate

Singapore's WhatsApp-first AI assistant hit PH Top 3, grew to 25,000 users, raised a $2M seed led by Golden Gate Ventures — then pivoted to real-estate agents.

What the business is

The Librarian is an AI personal assistant that lives inside WhatsApp, iMessage and SMS: it connects a user's Google apps, Slack and Notion, answers by chat or voice, and executes scheduling, email drafts, reminders and follow-ups.

Starting capitalUS$2 million seed round announced 2025-11-13, led by Golden Gate Ventures, with angels including Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman and Twenty Five Ventures.

How it started

Co-founded in November 2023 by Tiago Alves, who ran Aptoide's Asia business (nearly 100M monthly active users) and then was a partner at Golden Gate Ventures, and Neil Kumar, one of Yelp's first engineers and founding CTO of Karat. After ChatGPT's November 2022 launch, the two set out to build 'Siri for everything, but on WhatsApp' — one chat interface for email, scheduling and documents.

What happened

By April 2025 the product had only ~500 monthly active users, and VCs told Alves to come back with 5,000. A Product Hunt launch (Top 3, 1,000+ upvotes) plus focused marketing delivered 10x growth; the founders then added paid plans (Basic $9.99/mo, Pro $19.99/mo) and got their first 100 paying users. In November 2025 the company raised a $2M seed led by Golden Gate Ventures. Analyzing the first paying users, the founders found three clusters — real estate agents, insurance agents and startup founders — and in December 2025 decided to go deep into real estate.

How it ended up

Still live. By February 2026 the pivot was live: a voice-first AI companion for real-estate agents that turns a WhatsApp voice note into a lead profile, surfaces matching PropertyGuru listings and sets tasks and reminders, with the whole flow under three minutes. The company continues to operate from Singapore and Seattle.

Background

The Librarian is an AI assistant built into WhatsApp, iMessage and SMS. It connects to Google apps, Slack and Notion, takes instructions by chat or voice, and executes tasks — drafting emails, scheduling, searching, follow-ups. Co-founded November 2023 in Singapore by Tiago Alves (ex-Aptoide, ex-Golden Gate Ventures) and Neil Kumar (ex-Yelp, founding CTO of Karat).

The bet: professionals run their work life through chat: 'Siri for everything, but on WhatsApp'. Growth was slow — 500 MAU by April 2025. A July 2025 Product Hunt launch (Top 3, 1,000+ upvotes) brought 10x growth and first 100 paying users. November 2025: US$2M seed led by Golden Gate Ventures, with Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman among angels; 25,000 active users.

Analyzing who paid, founders found three clusters — real-estate agents, insurance agents, startup founders. In December 2025 they chose real estate; by February 2026 the pivot was live: a voice-first AI companion that turns a WhatsApp voice note into a lead profile, matches PropertyGuru listings, sets tasks in under three minutes. Operating from Singapore and Seattle.

What has to be true

  • The chat-native distribution bet worked: living inside WhatsApp removed install friction, which founders say is why adoption took off after Product Hunt launch.
  • Founders treated early paid users as market data: three paying-customer profiles pointed to real-estate agents, so they followed that vertical.
  • Funding milestones were met in sequence — 5,000 users, then paying users, then seed — letting a two-founder team raise $2M without a large product team.
  • A founder who had sat on the VC side (Alves was a Golden Gate Ventures partner) understood the milestone game and used it as a roadmap.

What can be applied

Distribution beats features: living inside WhatsApp let a two-founder startup reach 25,000 users on a $2M seed; when early paying customers cluster in one vertical, follow them there.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-02 The Librarian is live from Singapore and Seattle. After the November 2025 seed, it pivoted to a voice-first AI companion for real-estate agents: a WhatsApp voice note becomes a lead profile, matched against PropertyGuru listings, and turned into tasks. The February 2026 pivot keeps the chat-native interface but narrows focus to one vertical. Traction: 25,000 active users across US, Europe, Singapore as of 2025-11-13.
