Third Intelligence raises ¥10B betting 'ubiquitous AGI' can be Japan's third pole
Matsuo Lab carve-out founded Mar 2025 by Tokyo professor Matsuo and ex-Eureka CEO Ishibashi; ¥10B in year one for AGI that grows in each user's environment.
Third Intelligence (サードインテリジェンス)
What the business is
An AI research and product company building 'ubiquitous AGI' — foundational models that continue learning and adapting inside each customer's environment — and consumer products on top.
Starting capital:¥8B third-party allotment led by MUFG Bank (2025-11-12); cumulative ¥10B after a ¥2B follow-on from Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank and Shizuoka Capital (2026-01).
How it started
Founded March 2025 by University of Tokyo professor Yutaka Matsuo and ex-Eureka CEO Junya Ishibashi as a carve-out of Matsuo Institute's AI development; the founding was announced June 5, 2025. Matsuo joined as Chief Scientist, Ishibashi as CEO.
What happened
On November 12, 2025 the company announced its first funding round: ¥8B via third-party allotment, with MUFG Bank as lead investor and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking, SBI Group and Hakuhodo DY Ventures as underwriters, earmarked for hiring software engineers and AI researchers. In January 2026 it raised a further ¥2B from Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank and Shizuoka Capital, bringing cumulative first-round funding to ¥10B.
No ending yet — it is still running.
Background
Third Intelligence is a Tokyo AI research and product company founded in March 2025 by University of Tokyo professor Yutaka Matsuo and ex-Eureka CEO Junya Ishibashi, as a carve-out of the AI development Matsuo had been running at his institute. Its bet is that the winner in general AI will not be the biggest pre-trained chat model, but 'ubiquitous AGI' — models that keep learning and adapting inside each individual's or organization's own environment.
The company's first round, announced November 12, 2025, raised ¥8B through a third-party allotment led by MUFG Bank with Sumitomo Mitsui Banking, SBI Group and Hakuhodo DY Ventures as underwriters — an unusually large debut round for a Japanese startup, aimed at hiring AI researchers and software engineers. In January 2026 a ¥2B follow-on from Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank and Shizuoka Capital brought cumulative funding to ¥10B.
The thesis is explicit: because ubiquitous AGI continues learning during operation, it does not need massive data and compute from day one, the way frontier pre-training does. Ishibashi describes his role as building a global-standard research environment — competitive compensation, GPU infrastructure and talent — around Matsuo's algorithm work.
No product has shipped yet and the technology is unproven; the company is positioning itself as Japan's third pole in AGI, alongside US and Chinese frontier labs, and plans consumer products built on its foundational models.
What has to be true
- The edge-learning thesis reframes Japan's structural disadvantages (smaller data pools, less compute) as product features rather than fatal gaps.
- The founder pair covers both sides: Matsuo is one of Japan's most cited AI researchers, Ishibashi scaled Eureka and ran Match Group's East Asia business.
- Bank-led, cross-institutional funding gives a research company a patient, domestic capital base rare for frontier AI.
- Deliberately avoiding the pre-training arms race means the team is betting on a different curve rather than entering a war it cannot fund.
What can be applied
A late entrant can reframe the frontier race by changing the unit of intelligence: models that learn per-user turn a shortage of data and compute into a design decision instead of a handicap.
Aftermath
As of 2026-01-29 Third Intelligence had raised ¥10B cumulative within ten months of founding and was hiring research scientists and engineers globally, with plans to invest in GPU infrastructure and global-standard compensation. The ubiquitous-AGI thesis remains untested by any shipped product, and the bet is still open.
