Starting capitalListed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Growth market (东证 Growth 市场) in June 2024 at an offering price of ¥850 per share; on the first day it rose 51% to ¥1,281, with a market capitalization of about ¥155 billion (¥1,550亿).

How it started

Former Japan Airlines (日本航空) engineer Nobu Okada founded Astroscale in 2013, betting that space debris would become a commercial problem. In March 2020, JAXA signed a CRD2 Phase 1 cooperation contract with it; in March 2021, ELSA-d launched from Baikonur (拜科努尔) and completed the world's first commercial 'release–magnetic docking–re-recapture' demonstration, validating end-to-end removal technology.

What happened

In February 2024, the world's first commercial debris inspection satellite, ADRAS-J, launched by Rocket Lab; from April to July it completed staged close-proximity operations from several hundred kilometers to 50 meters, fixed-point observation and the first flyby observation; in August JAXA signed a CRD2 Phase 2 contract with Astroscale (ADRAS-J2); on November 30 it approached the target rocket upper stage to 15 meters. In June 2024 the company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Growth market, rising 51% on the first day. The ADRAS-J mission page notes that CRD2 Phase 1 has been completed.

How it ended up

The final step has not yet been delivered: ADRAS-J has completed its observation mission and began controlled deorbiting in March 2026; ADRAS-J2 is planned to launch in fiscal year 2027 to capture and remove the same piece of debris. The company is already listed and is moving from government demonstrations to commercial services.

Background

Astroscale, founded in 2013 by Nobu Okada, bet on space scavenger services. Under JAXA's CRD2 Phase 1, it proved technology, and in 2021 ELSA-d completed the first commercial release-docking demonstration.

The company still operates centered on Japan and the United Kingdom, positioning itself as a cross-orbit satellite services and orbital sustainability provider.
